Stoicism as a practical operating philosophy for modern life

Ryan Clark Holiday (born June 16, 1987) is an American author and former marketing strategist who became the most visible popularizer of Stoicism for a contemporary audience. After early work in media and marketing, where he was mentored by author Robert Greene, Holiday turned to the ancient Stoics and built a body of accessible books, a daily email, and the “Daily Stoic” platform around their practice.

His 2014 book The Obstacle Is the Way reframes the Stoic exercise of turning adversity into advantage and sold over a million copies, finding readers among professional athletes, military units, and entrepreneurs.

In 2016 Holiday published The Daily Stoic, co-authored with Stephen Hanselman, a year-long devotional of Stoic meditations drawn from Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca, which anchored a large daily-practice community.

He has been credited by The New York Times and others with driving the modern resurgence of Stoic philosophy, particularly its uptake in Silicon Valley and competitive sport. For the mind-power lineage, Holiday’s role is less as an original thinker than as a translator and distributor: he carries the Stoic core (that events are neutral and our judgments supply their meaning, and that the only true domain of control is our own response) to a mass modern readership in plain, actionable language.

Obstacle-as-opportunity: Popularizes the Stoic reframe in which adversity becomes the raw material of action and growth.

  • Daily Stoic practice: Builds a sustained devotional and community model that turns Stoic reading into a repeated daily discipline.
  • Mass translation of Stoicism: Renders Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca into accessible language for a global contemporary audience.
  • Stoicism for performance: Brings Stoic mental discipline into sport, business, and entrepreneurship as a practical operating philosophy.
The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.
