Andrew Holecek
Dream yoga & bardo training
The transmission
Andrew Holecek (b. c. 1955) is an American author, teacher, and former dental professional who became a prominent exponent of Tibetan Buddhist dream yoga and the practice of preparing for death through nocturnal training.
Steeped in the Vajrayana tradition, he presents lucid dreaming as the entry point to a deeper continuum of contemplative practices. His books — Dream Yoga: Illuminating Your Life Through Lucid Dreaming and the Tibetan Yogas of Sleep and Preparing to Die — frame the lucid dream, the dreamless deep-sleep (“clear light”) state, and the after-death bardos as a single graded path.
For Holecek, learning to remain aware as the dream and then the dreamless state dissolve is rehearsal for remaining aware through dying, making inner experiential mastery a spiritual technology.
What they gave
Graded nocturnal path: Maps lucid dreaming → dream yoga → sleep yoga → bardo practice as a continuum of conscious states.
- The void/clear-light state: Articulates the dreamless luminous state — a clear precursor to “the void” in reality-shifting discourse.
- Death as inner practice: Frames awareness training as preparation for the dissolution of experience itself.
- Rigorous tradition transmission: Brings authentic Vajrayana dream/sleep yoga to Western practitioners.
The line they stand in
