Quantum coherence in living organisms
The transmission
Mae-Wan Ho (1941–2016) was a geneticist and biophysicist whose book The Rainbow and the Worm: The Physics of Organisms (1993) argued that living organisms maintain quantum coherence over the whole body, behaving like a “liquid crystal” continuum in which water and collagen support rapid, coordinated, light-based communication.
She drew on Popp’s biophotons and Herbert Fröhlich’s coherence ideas, presenting the organism as a self-organizing coherent whole rather than a bag of chemical reactions. Some of this connects to legitimate questions in non-equilibrium thermodynamics and biophysics.
Ho’s reception is sharply divided.” For this Atlas the key point is that her coherence framework supplies energy-medicine and “vibrational health” movements with a holistic, physics-flavored model in which the body is a unified field responsive to subtle energies and, by extension, to intention and emotion.
What they gave
Whole-organism coherence: Modeled the body as a single coherent quantum/liquid-crystal field, a holistic basis for “energy body” claims.
- Water and collagen as medium: Emphasized structured water and connective tissue as a communication network, feeding “structured water” and biofield narratives.
- Bridge from Popp: Extended biophoton ideas into a comprehensive coherent-organism theory used by energy medicine.
- Holistic anti-reductionism: Reframed life as integrated wholeness, echoing nondual/oneness themes with a physics vocabulary.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Fritz-Albert Popp (biophotons); Herbert Fröhlich (coherence in biology); liquid-crystal and non-equilibrium physics.
- Influenced: Energy-medicine and biofield practitioners; structured-water and “vibrational health” discourse; holistic-biology popularizers.
