The transmission
Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len (1939–2022) was a Hawaiian psychologist and the foremost student and successor of Morrnah Simeona, carrying her Self-Identity through Ho’oponopono (SITH) practice to a global audience.
He is best known for a widely circulated (and frequently embellished) account in which he reportedly helped heal a ward of criminally insane patients at Hawaii State Hospital — not by treating them directly, but by reviewing their files and “cleaning” the parts of himself that resonated with their conditions.
His teaching, popularized through his collaboration with marketer-author Joe Vitale in the best-selling Zero Limits (2007), reduced the practice to repeating four phrases — “I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you” — addressed inwardly to the Divine to clear the “memories” replaying as one’s problems.
The premise is total responsibility: everything in one’s experienced reality is one’s own to clean.
What they gave
The four-phrase cleaning: Distilled the practice into a simple, repeatable mantra of repentance, forgiveness, and love.
- 100% responsibility for all reality: Taught that whatever appears in one’s life is one’s own to clear — a radical responsibility-for-all-reality stance.
- Cleaning as the only “doing”: Reframed problem-solving as continuously erasing inner memory-programs rather than acting outwardly.
- Mass popularization: Through Zero Limits, brought ho’oponopono to the worldwide self-help and manifestation audience.
The line they stand in
