A Teacher
Max Heindel
Esoteric Christian cosmology and spiritual evolution
The transmission
Max Heindel was born Carl Louis von Grasshoff on 23 July 1865 in Aarhus, Denmark, into a family of noble background that fell into genteel poverty after his father’s early death.
He emigrated and settled in Los Angeles, California, around 1903, working for a time as an engineer. He encountered Theosophy in 1904 and grew active in its circles before turning toward Rosicrucianism. He claimed that during a visit to Europe in 1907 he was taken by a mysterious teacher to a Rose Cross temple on the German-Bohemian border and there initiated and entrusted with a body of teaching he attributed to the “Elder Brothers.” From 1908 Heindel formulated these “Western Wisdom Teachings,” publishing them in 1909 as The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception, a systematic exposition of esoteric Christianity, spiritual evolution, and the constitution of the human being from a Rosicrucian standpoint.
The Rosicrucian Fellowship was launched in 1909 following a lecture course in Seattle, and Heindel later established its headquarters at Mount Ecclesia in Oceanside, California. Astrology was integral to his work, and through books such as Simplified Scientific Astrology (1919) he became an early American popularizer of horoscopy as an aid to spiritual development.
For the mind-power lineage, Heindel exemplifies the synthesis of Theosophical cosmology with Christian mysticism into a teaching of human spiritual evolution governed by intelligible cosmic law.
What they gave
The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception (1909): Produced an influential systematic map of esoteric Christian cosmology and the human spiritual constitution.
- The Western Wisdom Teachings: Adapted Theosophical and Rosicrucian ideas into a Christianized framework of spiritual evolution under cosmic law.
- Esoteric astrology: Popularized astrology in America as a practical tool for self-knowledge and inner development.
- Institutional vehicle: Founded the Rosicrucian Fellowship and Mount Ecclesia, carrying the teaching to a wide correspondence-based following.
In their words
No matter what the circumstances, it lies with us to master them, or to be mastered, as we will.
All that has been made by the hand of man is the embodiment of a thought.
All forms are impelled into motion by desire.
Mind is a form of energy, and immune from destruction.
Each of our thoughts takes a definite form and color perceptible to all, and this thought-symbol emits a certain tone, which is not a word, but it conveys our meaning to the one we address no matter what language he spoke on earth.
The brain is only the keyboard of the wonderful instrument upon which the human spirit plays its symphony of life, just as the musician expresses himself upon his violin.
The spirit or life which molds the form into an expression of itself is, therefore, as extraneous to the matter it uses as a carpenter is apart from and personally independent of the house he builds for his own occupancy.
