Graham Hancock

Lost civilizations & altered states

Graham Hancock is a British writer and one of the most commercially successful authors of “alternative history,” best known for Fingerprints of the Gods (1995) and the Netflix series Ancient Apocalypse, which argue for a lost advanced civilization erased by cataclysm.

In Supernatural (2005) he turned to psychedelics, drawing on his own ayahuasca and DMT experiences to argue that altered states accessed through plant medicines may explain the origins of religion, cave art, and humanity’s sense of contact with other realms.

Hancock’s place in this lineage is as the most popular mass-media conduit for the claim that psychedelic and visionary states stand at the root of human spirituality and culture. His reach is enormous and his influence on public consciousness discourse is real.

It must be stated plainly: Hancock’s core archaeological claims are speculative and are rejected by the academic mainstream, which finds no evidence for his lost civilization; his work is pseudo-archaeology, not accepted history.

His value for this Atlas is as a documented popularizer who carries entheogenic and consciousness-first ideas to a vast audience—an influence node, not a reliable source of fact.

Mass popularization: Carried psychedelic-origins-of-religion ideas to a huge mainstream audience via books and Netflix.

  • Altered-states-and-culture thesis: Argued visionary states underlie cave art, religion, and early spirituality.
  • Entheogenic advocacy: Framed plant medicines as gateways to humanity’s deepest experiences.
  • Influence node: A major contemporary amplifier of consciousness speculation. (Note: his lost-civilization archaeology is pseudo-archaeology, rejected by scholars.)

Influenced by: Alternative archaeology; Terence McKenna; ayahuasca and DMT experience; shamanic cave-art theories.

  • Influenced: Alternative-history media culture; psychedelic-origins-of-religion discourse; entheogenic spirituality; popular consciousness speculation.
