The Master Key System — mental concentration and the law of attraction
The transmission
Charles Francis Haanel (1866–1949) was an American businessman and New Thought author best known for The Master Key System, a correspondence course first issued in installments and copyrighted in 1916. A self-made entrepreneur who headed several companies, Haanel presented his system as a practical, week-by-week curriculum: twenty-four lessons, each with an exercise, designed to train mental concentration, visualization, and the deliberate use of thought to shape circumstance.
He also wrote Mental Chemistry (1922) and The New Psychology (1924). Haanel’s significance is methodological. Where much New Thought emphasized devotion or healing, he reframed the tradition as a disciplined training program in attention — sit still, focus, hold an image, repeat — closer to a mental gymnasium than a church.
The Master Key System became a touchstone of the success-and-attraction stream: it is frequently cited as an influence on later prosperity writers and was rediscovered by the modern law-of-attraction wave around The Secret.
He thus links 19th-century mind-cure to 20th-century self-development and to today’s manifestation culture.
What they gave
The Master Key System: A structured 24-lesson course training concentration, visualization, and directed thought.
- Concentration as a trainable skill: Treated focused attention as a muscle to be developed by daily, repeated exercise.
- Bridge to success literature: Carried New Thought metaphysics into the practical self-development and prosperity stream.
- Proto-law-of-attraction: Articulated thought as a causal, attracting force in clear, programmatic terms.
In their words
The subconscious mind is the seat of habit.
Ease and perfection are gained by repetition.
What method is necessary in order to impress the subconscious? Mentally state what is wanted.
The conscious mind is the seat of the will and may impress the subconscious.
Ease and perfection are gained by repetition.
The sure method of overcoming wrong suggestions is by the use of a strong counter suggestion, frequently repeated.
