Tunnels of Set / nightside

Kenneth Grant was a British occultist who served briefly as Aleister Crowley’s secretary and later became head of a Typhonian branch of the O.T.O.

Across his dense, allusive Typhonian Trilogies, Grant developed an idiosyncratic and influential occult cosmology that explored the “nightside” of the Tree of Life—the Tunnels of Set, the shadow-paths or qliphoth representing the averse, hidden, and dangerous regions of consciousness.

He fused Crowley’s Thelema with Austin Osman Spare’s sorcery, Tantric Vamachara, and—controversially—the fictional horror mythos of H.P. Lovecraft, treating imaginative fiction as a genuine gateway to magical currents.

Grant’s contribution to the lineage is his exploration of the shadow and the deliberately fictional as magical territory. His “nightside” Kabbalah extends the consciousness-map into its repressed and transgressive regions, paralleling depth psychology’s shadow (Jung, Kalsched) in an explicitly magical register.

More striking for a memetic database is his treatment of fiction as an operative source: by drawing magical reality from Lovecraft’s invented mythos, Grant prefigured the chaos-magic and modern internet-occult insight that belief and imaginative fiction can themselves generate functional magical currents—a direct conceptual ancestor of “hyperstition,” tulpa/egregore practice, and fiction-based reality-shifting in the contemporary online occult.

Tunnels of Set / nightside: Mapped the shadow, averse regions of the consciousness-tree.

  • Fiction as gateway: Treated invented mythos (Lovecraft) as a real magical current—proto-hyperstition.
  • Synthesis of currents: Fused Thelema, Spare’s sorcery, and Tantra into one cosmology.
  • Shadow as territory: Extended magical work into repressed/transgressive consciousness.
Each such revival of magical power establishes a further link in the chain of humanity’s evolution, which is but one phase only of the evolution of Consciousness.
