Amit Goswami
Consciousness-based ‘monistic idealism’
The transmission
Amit Goswami (1936–present) is an Indian-American theoretical physicist who spent a legitimate career teaching nuclear physics at the University of Oregon.
He is best known, however, as a prominent advocate of “monistic idealism” — the view, set out in The Self-Aware Universe (1993), that consciousness, not matter, is the ground of all being, and that the physical world is the collapse of quantum possibility by a unitary cosmic consciousness in which all observers participate.
He explicitly fuses quantum mechanics with Vedanta and presents himself as a “quantum activist.” Goswami’s reception illustrates the core tension of this branch. His underlying physics training is real, but his interpretation — consciousness collapsing the wave function into existence, “downward causation,” reincarnation and healing explained by quantum idealism — is a philosophical/metaphysical program, not a result of physics, and it is rejected by the mainstream physics community as a misuse of quantum formalism.
He rose to wide visibility through the film What the Bleep Do We Know!? (2004), a touchstone of popular quantum mysticism that science communicators have criticized heavily. Goswami is one of the most direct bridges between credentialed physics language and manifestation metaphysics: he gives “you create your reality” an explicitly quantum-idealist.
What they gave
Quantum monistic idealism: Gave “consciousness creates reality” an explicit quantum-and-Vedanta formulation widely adopted in manifestation.
- Consciousness collapses possibility: Recast wavefunction collapse as cosmic mind actualizing the world — a foundational manifestation claim.
- What the Bleep platform: Reached a mass audience as a credentialed voice for quantum mysticism.
- Quantum activism: Framed personal and social transformation as flowing from idealist physics.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Vedanta/monistic idealism; Eugene Wigner and the measurement problem; the consciousness-collapse tradition.
- Influenced: What the Bleep and popular quantum-mysticism; manifestation teachers; the “quantum activism” community.
