The Law of Assumption

Neville Goddard was born in 1905 in St. Michael, Barbados, the fourth of ten children in a merchant family, and emigrated to the United States at seventeen to study theater.

Working as a dancer and actor in New York during the 1920s, he grew dissatisfied with mainstream religion and pursued mysticism, eventually studying for several years under an enigmatic teacher he identified only as “Abdullah,” an Ethiopian-Jewish instructor in Hebrew, Kabbalah, and esoteric Christianity.

From Abdullah, Goddard absorbed a radically psychological reading of scripture in which every biblical figure and event symbolizes a state of human consciousness rather than external history. By the late 1930s Goddard had abandoned performance for full-time lecturing and writing, producing At Your Command (1939) and a steady stream of books and recorded talks until his death in 1972.

His mature teaching collapsed the New Thought distinction between the operator and an external “Universal Mind,” insisting instead that human imagination is God and that consciousness is the sole reality. In his later “Promise” period he increasingly framed manifestation as a stage on the way to a mystical awakening he described through visionary experience.

His intellectual journey thus moved from theatrical self-fashioning, through Kabbalistic and Hermetic study, to a thoroughly solipsistic metaphysics of imagination.

The Law of Assumption: Reframes manifestation as the act of assuming the feeling of the wish already fulfilled, rather than visualizing an external object to be acquired.

  • “Feeling is the secret”: Identifies emotional conviction—not mere mental imagery or willpower—as the operative mechanism that impresses the subconscious.
  • States of consciousness: Treats every condition (wealth, health, poverty) as a pre-existing “state” one occupies and shifts between, an early articulation of “states” and reality-shifting language.
  • Identification of imagination with God: Eliminates the external Formless Substance of earlier New Thought, locating all creative power within the individual’s “I AM” awareness.
Imagination is the very gateway of reality.
