Structures of consciousness; the integral-aperspectival
The transmission
Jean Gebser (1905–1973) was a German-born cultural philosopher whose major work The Ever-Present Origin (1949/1953) proposed that human consciousness has unfolded through a series of distinct structures: the archaic, magic, mythic, mental, and an emerging integral-aperspectival structure.
Each is not merely a stage of belief but a different way of constituting space, time, and self — the magic structure being spaceless and timeless and group-fused, the mythic imaginal and cyclical, the mental perspectival and rational.
Gebser argued that the rational-mental structure had reached a crisis (its “deficient” hypertrophy producing the disorders of modernity) and that a new integral structure, capable of holding all prior structures transparently and perceiving the “ever-present origin,” was breaking through.
Gebser is a foundational influence on the “evolution of consciousness” paradigm that pervades contemporary mind-power and transformational spirituality. His mapping of distinct consciousness-structures, and especially his claim of an emerging integral awareness, was a primary source for Ken Wilber’s integral theory and for the wider discourse of “consciousness is evolving / we are entering a new stage of awareness.” His notion that the magic and mythic structures (where mind and world are not sharply separated, where intention and image carry power) are still active within us provides a sophisticated frame for why mind-power and magical thinking persist and feel real.
The honest framing: Gebser is a rigorous cultural-philosophical theorist, not a manifestation teacher; his structures are interpretive phenomenology, but they supply much of the intellectual scaffolding for “evolutionary” spirituality.
What they gave
Structures of consciousness: Archaic, magic, mythic, mental, integral — the deep template for “evolution of consciousness.”
- The integral-aperspectival: An emerging awareness holding all prior structures, a primary source for Wilber and integral spirituality.
- The magic/mythic structures: A sophisticated frame for why magical thinking and mind-power feel real and persist.
- Critique of deficient rationality: Diagnosing modernity’s crisis, motivating “next stage of consciousness” hopes.
In their words
The irruption of time into our consciousness: this is the profound and unique event of our historical moment.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Bergson (duration); phenomenology; Sri Aurobindo (evolution of consciousness); depth psychology.
- Influenced: Ken Wilber and integral theory; evolution-of-consciousness and “new paradigm” discourse.
