The transmission
Shakti Gawain was an American author and pioneer of the New Age movement whose 1978 book Creative Visualization became one of the foundational popular texts on using mental imagery to shape one’s life.
Drawing on meditation, affirmation, and guided imagery, she presented visualization as a learnable practice for health, relationships, and goals, framed in gentle, accessible, distinctly West-Coast spiritual language.
Gawain’s importance is in naming and popularizing “creative visualization” as a household practice, helping to define the New Age self-help genre that flourished from the late 1970s onward. Her later books, including Living in the Light, emphasized intuition and inner guidance.
She bridged older New Thought affirmation techniques with the emerging human-potential and meditation cultures, and her terminology and exercises remain embedded in contemporary manifestation teaching, where “visualization” is a near-universal staple.
