Fred P. Gallo

Coined ‘energy psychology’ term

Fred P. Gallo is an American clinical psychologist credited with coining and popularizing the umbrella term “energy psychology” in the 1990s, giving a disparate cluster of meridian-tapping and subtle-energy techniques a single disciplinary name and identity.

A student and early adopter of Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy, Gallo recognized that TFT, EFT, and various kinesiology-based emotional methods shared a common premise—that psychological problems are linked to disturbances in the body’s energy system and can be treated by stimulating acupoints, meridians, chakras, or biofields—and he gathered them under the heading “energy psychology” in books such as Energy Psychology (1998) and Energy Diagnostic and Treatment Methods (EDxTM).

By naming the field, he helped consolidate a professional community, a literature, and an organizational center of gravity (he was associated with the founding milieu of comprehensive energy psychology). Gallo’s significance for this Atlas is essentially taxonomic and consolidating: he is the figure who turned a set of techniques into a category, which in turn shaped how the wellbeing-and-mind-power world classifies and markets tapping methods.

His own integrative method (EDxTM) tried to make point-selection more individualized and diagnostic. As with the field he named, the practical, self-regulatory dimension of his work is plausible and clinically usable, while the defining theoretical claim—that emotional problems are literally encoded in and treated through a measurable “energy system”—remains scientifically unsubstantiated and is the central point of critical contention.

Because Gallo defined the field’s boundaries and vocabulary, he is a natural anchor for the empirical-standing debate.

Coined “energy psychology”: Named and unified the field, consolidating tapping/biofield methods into one category.

  • Authored foundational texts: Energy Psychology and works systematizing the field’s premises and methods.
  • Developed EDxTM: An integrative, diagnostic energy-treatment method aiming at individualized point selection.
  • Taxonomic anchor: Defined the category whose core energy claim is empirically contested. (See empirical-standing analysis.)

Influenced by: Roger Callahan (TFT); applied kinesiology; acupuncture / meridian theory; clinical and cognitive-behavioral psychology.

  • Influenced: the named discipline of energy psychology; David Feinstein; ACEP; later EP method developers. (Critical note: the field’s defining “energy system” mechanism is scientifically unsubstantiated.)
