Karl Friston

Free energy & predictive brain

Karl Friston is a British neuroscientist, one of the most cited figures in his field, best known for the “free energy principle”—an ambitious mathematical theory proposing that all self-organizing systems, including brains, act to minimize “free energy,” a quantity that bounds prediction error.

On this account the brain is fundamentally a prediction machine: it builds a generative model of the world and continuously updates that model to reduce the gap between its predictions and incoming sensory data. This framework, closely tied to predictive processing and Bayesian inference, recasts perception itself as a controlled hallucination disciplined by error correction.

Friston is arguably the most important contemporary scientific source for the “your brain constructs reality” framing this Atlas tracks. His free-energy and predictive-processing models give the strongest current technical backing to the claim that we do not perceive the world directly but infer it from an internal model.

This has been taken up to explain psychedelic experience (as a “relaxation” of high-level priors), meditation, and belief change—and, in looser popular and New Age translation, to support reality-shifting and manifestation narratives in which altering one’s internal model alters experienced reality.

Friston’s actual theory is a formal, falsifiable scientific program; the spiritualized extrapolations from it are not his.

Free energy principle: Proposed a unifying account of brains (and life) as prediction-error-minimizing systems.

  • Predictive brain: Recast perception as inference from an internal generative model—“controlled hallucination.”
  • Reality-construction backbone: Supplied the leading scientific grounding for “the brain constructs reality.”
  • Psychedelic and belief models: Framed altered states and belief change as shifts in predictive priors. (Note: spiritual extrapolations exceed his formal theory.)

Influenced by: Bayesian statistics; Helmholtz’s unconscious inference; cybernetics and control theory; thermodynamics.

  • Influenced: Predictive-processing neuroscience; Andy Clark; psychedelic “relaxed beliefs” theory; popular “brain constructs reality” discourse.
