Digital physics — the universe as computation

Edward Fredkin was an American physicist and computer scientist, a professor at MIT and Carnegie Mellon, and a pioneer of digital physics (which he termed “digital philosophy”).

He proposed that the universe is fundamentally a vast computational process—specifically, that physical reality can be understood as the output of a cellular automaton, a discrete, rule-governed information-processing system, with space, time, and matter all reducible to computation.

He also contributed the reversible “Fredkin gate,” important in reversible and quantum computing. Fredkin’s place in the Atlas is as a serious, credentialed originator of the “universe as computation” thesis—the most direct intellectual ancestor of modern simulation theory.

He sits at the legitimate end of this lineage, supplying the conceptual link from Wheeler’s information-first physics to the simulation hypothesis and, ultimately, to the “simulation spirituality” that the broader ecosystem increasingly draws upon.

Digital physics: Originated the thesis that the universe is fundamentally a computational/cellular-automaton process.

  • Universe-as-computation: Provided the serious intellectual ancestor of the simulation hypothesis.
  • Reversible computing: Contributed foundational ideas (the Fredkin gate) to information physics.
  • Bridge to simulation thought: Connected informational physics to computational cosmology and simulation discourse.
We hypothesize that there will be found a single cellular automaton rule that models all of microscopic physics; and models it exactly. We call this field DM, for digital mechanics.
An informational process based on reversible universal cellular automata, Physica D (1990)

  • Influenced: digital physics; Stephen Wolfram; simulation-theory discourse; computational cosmology.
Standing note: Serious minority research program in physics/computer science — legitimate, not fringe.
