The transmission
Frater U∴D∴ (Ralph Tegtmeier, b. 1952) is a German occultist, translator, and author widely regarded as one of the founders of the modern chaos magic and “pragmatic magic” current in continental Europe.
He played a central role in transmitting and systematizing Austin Osman Spare’s sigil techniques for a contemporary audience. His influential works Practical Sigil Magic and High Magic codified the modern method of encoding a desire into an abstract sigil, then charging it while bypassing the conscious mind so the intention “sinks” into the subconscious.
He framed magic experimentally and results-first, in line with chaos-magic sensibilities, treating belief itself as a tool.
What they gave
Sigil magic systematized: Turned Spare’s method into a clear, teachable procedure for impressing intention on the subconscious.
- Subconscious bypass: Centered the idea that desire must be passed below conscious awareness to operate — a directly psychological mechanism.
- Belief as a tool: Advanced the pragmatic/chaos stance that one can adopt and discard beliefs to achieve results.
- Results-orientation: Modeled an experimental, outcome-driven approach to inner technique.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Austin Osman Spare; Peter Carroll and chaos magic; Tantric and pragmatic-magic currents.
