Dream of Knowledge / pineal doorway

Oliver Fox (pen name of Hugh George Callaway, 1885–1949) was an English writer and early experiential pioneer of both lucid dreaming and out-of-body travel.

Beginning around 1902, he developed what he called the “Dream of Knowledge” — the recognition, within a dream, that one is dreaming — decades before the term “lucid dream” was coined. His accounts, published in the journal Occult Review and collected in Astral Projection: A Record of Out-of-the-Body Experiences (1939), described a method of using the moment of dream-lucidity as a launch point for full OBE, including his idea of passing through an imagined “pineal doorway.” Alongside Frederik van Eeden (who coined “lucid dream”), Fox is regarded as a founding figure who treated conscious dreaming as a trainable skill and gateway to deeper exploration.

The “Dream of Knowledge”: An early, clear description of dream-lucidity as a recognizable and cultivable state.

  • Lucidity-to-OBE bridge: Pioneered using the lucid dream as a springboard into out-of-body experience.
  • Trainable inner skill: Framed conscious dreaming as a discipline to be developed through repeated effort.
  • Founding documentation: Provided some of the earliest detailed first-person records that grounded later research.

Influenced by: spiritualism and Theosophy; his own lucid-dream and OBE experiences.

  • Influenced: Sylvan Muldoon; the modern lucid-dreaming and OBE literature.
