Tree of Life as map

Dion Fortune (born Violet Mary Firth) was a British occultist, novelist, and founder of the Society of the Inner Light, who trained in a Golden Dawn offshoot and became one of the 20th century’s most lucid expositors of ceremonial magic.

Trained also in early psychoanalysis, she uniquely fused depth psychology with esoteric practice, defining magic as “the art of causing changes in consciousness in accordance with will.” Her masterwork The Mystical Qabalah (1935) remains the standard modern exposition of the Tree of Life as a comprehensive map of the cosmos and the psyche, while her occult novels conveyed magical principles through fiction.

Fortune’s significance for the mind-power lineage is twofold. First, her definition of magic as changing consciousness by will explicitly relocates magical power into the operator’s own mind, drawing magic and psychology into a single frame and making her a key bridge between the occult and psychological branches of this Atlas.

Second, her treatment of the Tree of Life as a map of both cosmos and psyche exemplifies the “as above, so below” correspondence principle—the structure of reality mirrored in the structure of mind—central to the whole tradition.

By integrating Jungian and Freudian insight with ritual, she anticipated the later “psychologized magic” of figures like Regardie and DuQuette and the broad convergence of occult technique with inner-work practice.

Magic as changing consciousness by will: Defined magic in psychological terms, bridging occult and mind-power frames.

  • Tree of Life as map of psyche + cosmos: Modeled correspondence between inner and outer structure.
  • Magic–psychology fusion: Integrated psychoanalytic insight with ritual practice.
  • Western Mysteries transmission: Founded a lasting school and clarified Kabbalistic magic for moderns.
We live in the midst of invisible forces whose effects alone we perceive. We move among invisible forms whose actions we very often do not perceive at all, though we may be profoundly affected by them.
