Science of Living; ‘Thinkonomics’; prosperity through the mind

Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II (1935–2009), universally known as Reverend Ike, was an American preacher and broadcaster based in New York City who became, in the 1970s, one of the most famous and flamboyant prosperity teachers in the United States.

Born in Ridgeland, South Carolina, of African and Indo-Dutch descent, he began as a Pentecostal-style healing evangelist but broke from traditional Christianity to preach what he called the “Science of Living” — an unapologetic fusion of New Thought mental-power teaching with prosperity theology.

From his United Church Science of Living Institute (housed in a former movie palace he bought in 1969), his weekly radio and television sermons reached hundreds of stations and millions of listeners at his peak. Reverend Ike’s signature contribution to the mind-power lineage was to push the New Thought prosperity premise to its most explicit, charismatic, and openly money-focused extreme.

He coined “Thinkonomics” — the doctrine that thought and self-image are the true engines of wealth — and famously inverted scripture with lines like “the lack of money is the root of all evil” and “you can’t lose with the stuff I use.” His showmanship, luxury, and “Blessing Plan” fundraising drew heavy criticism (including accusations of exploitation), and he sits at the controversial edge of the tradition.

But doctrinally he is a direct, popularized descendant of Quimby-Hill-Peale New Thought: change your mind about money and yourself, he taught, and your conditions follow — “close your eyes and see green. Money up to your armpits.”

“Science of Living”: packaged New Thought mental causation as a mass-media prosperity practice for a Black urban and national audience largely outside the existing New Thought churches.

  • “Thinkonomics”: the explicit teaching that prosperity is produced by inner self-image and belief, not external circumstance — a blunt restatement of The Inner Creates the Outer/The Inner Creates the Outer.
  • Mass-media popularizer: one of the first to carry mind-power prosperity teaching to a huge radio/TV audience, prefiguring the modern prosperity-gospel and manifestation ecosystems.
  • The controversial mirror: his money-forward extremity makes him a test case for where prosperity teaching tips into exploitation (the fault-vs-mechanism and distortion discussions).
I teach what I call Mind Power. Some people have not been taught how to work their minds. Pardon the expression, but they were taught to work their behinds.
Thinkonomics! (2008)
Positive self-image psychology is seeing oneself in one’s own mind being, doing, and having the good one desires.

Whatever you add to I AM, that is what you become.

Nothing can come to you unless you believe you deserve it, and nothing can go from you unless you believe you don’t deserve it.

If you are looking for a god-in-the-sky to depend on, if you are looking for a god outside of you to help you, forget it! God is within you. And when you discover God, you will discover Him within your own being.

Separate the truth of a person from what he appears to be. Look all the way through what appears, and see him, his Divine Self, the Presence of God within him. See him as he really is. There is only one true identity, and that is the Divine Self.

God is not someone else, somewhere else, sometime else. God is here and now and living, sometimes dormant, in everyone.
