Releasing emotions to let go

Hale Dwoskin is an American author and teacher who studied directly with Lester Levenson and became the principal popularizer of Levenson’s releasing work under the name the Sedona Method.

He co-founded Sedona Training Associates in 1996 to teach the method to individuals and organizations, and serves as its CEO and director of training. (His birth year is not reliably documented in available sources and is therefore left unstated here rather than guessed.) His best-known work, The Sedona Method: Your Key to Lasting Happiness, Success, Peace and Emotional Well-Being, was published in 2003 and reached the New York Times bestseller list.

Dwoskin’s contribution to the mind-power lineage is to have taken Levenson’s somewhat informal “letting go” and rendered it into a structured, teachable sequence - typically a set of simple questions that invite a person to welcome a feeling and then release it.

He was among the teachers featured in the 2006 film The Secret, which broadened his audience. The method is presented as serving two ends at once: relief from unwanted emotion and the clearing of inner resistance said to block desired outcomes, with a further pointing - inherited from Levenson - toward the recognition of an unbounded Self beneath the released emotions.

Systematizing releasing: He turned Levenson’s letting-go into a clear, repeatable question-based process accessible to beginners.

  • The Sedona Method book and trainings: His 2003 bestseller and Sedona Training Associates (1996) carried the technique to a wide public and corporate audience.
  • Releasing for manifestation: He taught letting go of resistance as a means not only of peace but of allowing wanted outcomes.
  • Mainstream exposure: His role in The Secret (2006) brought emotional-release practice to a mass audience.
Now, open your hand and roll the object around in it. Notice that you are the one holding on to it; it is not attached to your hand. The same is true with your feelings, too. Your feelings are as attached to you as this object is attached to your hand.

At the core you are empty, silent, and at peace—not in the pain and darkness that most of us would assume.
The Sedona Method: Your Key to Lasting Happiness, Success, Peace and Emotional Well-Being
There are five ways to approach the process of releasing, and they all lead to the same result: liberating your natural ability to let go of any unwanted emotion on the spot.
