Health and the Inner Life — documenting and systematizing the Quimby method

Horatio Willis Dresser (1866–1954) was an American New Thought leader, philosopher, and the movement’s first serious historian. The son of Julius and Annetta Dresser — two of Phineas Quimby’s patients who became early advocates of mental healing — he grew up inside the tradition and brought to it academic rigor, studying philosophy under William James at Harvard.

He wrote prolifically, including Health and the Inner Life, an analytical and historical study of spiritual-healing theories with an account of Quimby’s life and teaching, and A History of the New Thought Movement (1919).

His pivotal contribution is documentary. After Quimby’s papers were made available, Dresser compiled and edited them as The Quimby Manuscripts (1921), preserving the source record of the man many regard as New Thought’s originator — and anchoring the movement’s claim of descent from Quimby rather than from Mary Baker Eddy.

By writing the movement’s history and curating its founding documents, Dresser gave New Thought self-awareness as a tradition: a lineage with a documented origin, a method, and a philosophy, rather than a loose collection of healers.

The Quimby Manuscripts: Compiled and edited Quimby’s papers (1921), preserving the movement’s foundational source documents.

  • First historian: Wrote A History of the New Thought Movement, giving the tradition a documented account of itself.
  • Health and the Inner Life: Produced an analytical study tracing spiritual-healing theory back to Quimby’s method.
  • Philosophical rigor: Brought academic philosophy (via William James) to bear on mental-healing claims.
The Emersonian idea of self-reliance is an expression of this faith in the light which shines for the individual within the sanctuary of the soul.
