Bill Donahue (William T. Donahue, 1934-2026) was an American esoteric teacher and former U.S. Navy serviceman who, from his home in Forked River, New Jersey, built one of the largest online bodies of work decoding the Bible as a symbolic, inner document rather than a historical record.
Working under the banner “Hidden Meanings” (hiddenmeanings.com) together with his wife Joan, he produced more than 800 short video lectures and a library of written commentaries that, by the time of his death, had drawn millions of YouTube views and website visitors.
His central claim is that scripture is a map of consciousness: the crucifixion and resurrection are read as inner events, the Exodus as the soul’s escape from bondage, and Revelation as the unveiling of one’s true Self.
Donahue’s method fuses gnostic and Hermetic interpretation with astro-theology and physiology. He treats biblical figures as solar and symbolic ciphers (Joseph’s coat of many colors as the spectrum of light; Jesus and Joseph as Sun-figures), interprets “the Christ” as a state of awakened consciousness latent in every person, and frequently ties spiritual awakening to the pineal gland, kundalini energy, and meditation, drawing analogies to astrology, numerology, and modern physics.
Rather than founding a church or movement, he disseminated a self-directed esoteric curriculum (organized into a sequence of core books and supplementary texts) and an open archive of talks, making him a distinctly internet-era exponent of the long Western tradition of reading scripture for its hidden, gnostic meaning. He died on January 4, 2026, at the age of 91.
