A Teacher
John Demartini
Values, perception, and the gratitude/balance method
The transmission
John Demartini (born 1954) is an American human-behavior specialist, author, and founder of the Demartini Institute, who overcame childhood learning difficulties and a near-fatal teenage episode to become a prolific teacher of personal development.
He reached a mass audience through his appearance in the 2006 film and book The Secret, and built a body of work around the premise that a person’s hierarchy of values silently governs what they perceive, attract, and act upon.
His signature contribution is the Demartini Method, a structured questioning process (the ‘Quadrant’ or ‘Collapse Process’) designed to dissolve one-sided emotional charges - infatuation or resentment - by finding the balancing benefits and drawbacks in any event, returning the mind to a state of poise and gratitude.
Within the Atlas he sits among the modern self-help and manifestation teachers as the most explicitly ‘values-and-perception’ voice: where peers stress belief or vibration, Demartini grounds transformation in restructuring the value hierarchy and in a disciplined gratitude practice, drawing openly on Hermetic and Pythagorean ideas of universal balance.
What they gave
The Demartini Method: A systematic question-set that neutralizes lopsided emotional charges by surfacing hidden benefits and drawbacks, restoring balance and gratitude.
- The hierarchy of values: Argues that each person’s ranked values determine what they notice, pursue, and manifest - so changing outcomes means working with (not against) one’s true values.
- Perception as projection: Frames the outer world as a mirror of one’s values and judgments, a behavioral restatement of ‘the outer reflects the inner.’
- Gratitude as method: Treats gratitude not as sentiment but as the operational endpoint of a balancing process.

The line they stand in
Demartini draws explicitly on the Hermetic principle of polarity and on Pythagorean notions of universal order and balance, recast as a practical psychology of values and perception. Emerging into prominence through The Secret, he stands alongside the modern manifestation and success teachers, contributing the distinctive emphasis that perception, attraction, and behavior are organized by a person’s value hierarchy.
