Conscious autosuggestion

Émile Coué was born in 1857 in Troyes, France, and trained as a pharmacist (apothecary). Working at his dispensary, he made a clinical observation that reshaped his career: patients improved more when he praised the efficacy of a remedy, indicating that expectation itself produced therapeutic effects.

Pursuing this insight, he studied hypnotism under Ambroise-Auguste Liébeault and the Nancy School, but grew dissatisfied with the dependency and authority of the hypnotist-subject relationship, seeking instead a method patients could administer to themselves.

The result was “conscious autosuggestion,” a system Coué developed and popularized in the 1910s and 1920s and summarized in Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion (1922). He argued that the imagination, not the will, governs behavior and bodily function, and that deliberately planted suggestions are realized automatically by the subconscious.

His famous formula—“Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better,” repeated rhythmically each morning and night—made the method portable and democratic. His celebrated lecture tours of Britain and America spread “Couéism” widely and seeded the affirmation practices that would saturate New Thought and twentieth-century self-help.

Conscious, self-administered suggestion: Removes the external hypnotist, making suggestion a private, repeatable technique anyone can apply to themselves.

  • The primacy of imagination over will: Establishes “Coué’s Law”—that when will and imagination conflict, imagination always wins—redirecting practice away from effortful striving.
  • The standardized formula: Provides a portable, rhythmic affirmation (“better and better”) that becomes a template for all later affirmation work.
  • Automatic subconscious realization: Frames the subconscious as a mechanism that executes whatever suggestion is impressed on it without conscious struggle.
Every day, in every respect, I am getting better and better.
