Andy Clark

Predictive mind & extended cognition

Andy Clark is a British philosopher of cognitive science known for two influential ideas. The first, developed with David Chalmers, is the “extended mind” thesis: that cognition is not confined to the skull but can extend into tools, notebooks, and environment, so that the boundary of the mind is functional rather than anatomical.

The second, articulated in Surfing Uncertainty (2016) and The Experience Machine (2023), is a leading philosophical synthesis of predictive processing: the brain as a “prediction machine” that constructs experience by continually anticipating sensory input and correcting its errors.

Clark is a key translator of the cybernetic-predictive stream into accessible philosophy, and thus an important node for the modern “your brain constructs reality” framing. His clear articulation that perception is a controlled, prediction-driven construction—and that the mind reaches beyond the body into the world—gives intellectual respectability to ideas that consciousness culture readily extends.

His extended-mind thesis in particular resonates with holistic and systems-flavored spirituality’s blurring of the self-world boundary. Clark is a careful analytic philosopher; the metaphysical and reality-shifting uses of his work go well beyond his actual, empirically anchored claims.

Predictive-mind philosophy: Gave the leading philosophical exposition of the brain as a prediction-driven construction engine.

  • Extended mind: Argued cognition spills beyond the skull into tools and environment, blurring the self-world boundary.
  • “Controlled hallucination”: Helped popularize the framing that experience is actively constructed, not received.
  • Bridge to the public: Translated Friston-style neuroscience into accessible philosophy feeding consciousness discourse.

Influenced by: Karl Friston and predictive processing; cybernetics; embodied cognition; philosophy of mind.

  • Influenced: Predictive-processing philosophy; “controlled hallucination” popularization; Anil Seth; mind-extends-into-world discourse.
