Dawson Church

Epigenetics of intention, EFT research

Dawson Church (1956–present) is an author and energy-psychology researcher best known for The Genie in Your Genes (2008) and Mind to Matter (2018), which argue that thoughts, emotions, and intention reach down to the level of gene expression (epigenetics) and even shape the material world.

He has been an active promoter and researcher of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques / “tapping”), publishing clinical studies — including on PTSD in veterans — through his foundation and affiliated journals.

Church occupies a mixed tier. There is genuine, mainstream science behind parts of his story: epigenetics is real, stress demonstrably affects gene expression, and some EFT trials show benefit for anxiety and PTSD (though critics note the active ingredient is likely standard exposure/cognitive therapy rather than “energy meridians,” and that much EFT research is published in lower-tier or in-house venues with methodological concerns).

The problem is the extrapolation in Mind to Matter, where he assembles selective evidence to argue that mind literally creates physical reality, blending legitimate psychophysiology with manifestation metaphysics and contested “intention” experiments.

Tier: contested — a real psychophysiology core inflated toward mind-creates-reality claims.

Epigenetics of emotion: Popularized “your thoughts change your genes,” giving manifestation a molecular-biology vocabulary. - Mind-to-matter synthesis: Assembled physiology, neuroscience, and intention claims into a unified “mind creates reality” narrative.
