Tarot, Qabalah & sound vibration

Paul Foster Case (1884–1954) was an American occultist and former vaudeville musician who became a major systematizer of Hermetic Qabalah and Tarot.

After involvement in the American Golden Dawn current (the Thoth-Hermes Temple), he founded the Builders of the Adytum (B.O.T.A.) in the 1920s, a mystery school that survives today and teaches through graded correspondence lessons.

Case’s central work integrated the 22 Tarot trumps with the paths of the Qabalistic Tree of Life, the Hebrew alphabet, color, and sound into a unified system of meditation and self-development. Books such as The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages and The True and Invisible Rosicrucian Order present a curriculum in which contemplating these correspondences reshapes consciousness.

His musical background fed a distinctive emphasis on tone and vibration as transformative.

Tarot as meditation system: Reframed the Tarot from divination tool to structured map for inner transformation.

  • Sound and color vibration: Developed practices using specific tones and colors to attune consciousness — an early “vibration”-based mind technology.
  • Affirmation and mental imagery: Integrated New Thought-style affirmation with Qabalistic meditation in B.O.T.A.’s curriculum.
  • A teachable lineage: B.O.T.A.’s correspondence course delivered his system to a wide ongoing membership.
Everything in the universe is the self-expression of the I AM. This is the first principle, the primary existence, the First Mover.

All changes are primarily changes in mental imagery. Change the image, and ultimately the external form will change.
The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages (1947)
True concentration is perfect transparency, in which personality becomes a free, unobstructed channel for the passage downward and outward of the superconscious radiant energy.
The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages (1947)
The wand is a symbol of will, of which attention, the wand itself, is the essence, and to which memory, the wallet, is closely linked.
The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages (1947)
The Hermit is the Supreme Will, the cosmic, eternal urge to freedom.
