Reality as information simulation
The transmission
Thomas Campbell (born 1944) is an American physicist who spent his career working on technical systems analysis (including missile-defense and large-system simulation work for NASA and the U.S. military).
Crucially, in the 1970s he worked directly with Robert Monroe at the early Monroe Institute, helping to develop and scientifically scrutinize the Hemi-Sync research and serving as one of Monroe’s experimental explorers of altered states.
This combination—rigorous systems physicist by day, disciplined out-of-body experimenter by night—shaped his lifelong attempt to unify consciousness and physics. Campbell’s contribution, set out in his three-volume My Big TOE (Theory of Everything) (2003), is a thoroughgoing reframing of reality as an information-based virtual reality simulation.
In his model, consciousness is the fundamental computing substrate (“the larger consciousness system”), and the physical universe is a rendered, rule-based virtual reality—data, not matter. He recasts spiritual growth in information-theoretic terms: the purpose of the simulation is to lower the “entropy” of one’s consciousness, with love defined as low entropy and fear as high entropy.
This translation of metaphysics into the language of computation, simulation, and entropy gave the manifestation and consciousness community a contemporary, technologically literate vocabulary, positioning him as a key bridge between Monroe-style exploration and the modern “reality is a simulation” worldview.
What they gave
Reality as virtual simulation: Models the physical universe as a rendered, rule-based information system rather than fundamental matter.
- Consciousness as the computer: Treats consciousness (the “larger consciousness system”) as the fundamental computing substrate from which reality is rendered.
- Entropy ethics: Defines spiritual growth as lowering consciousness “entropy,” with love as low entropy and fear as high entropy—an information-theoretic morality.
- Physics-literate metaphysics: Restates manifestation and growth in the language of computation and systems theory, modernizing the vocabulary.
