A Teacher
W.E. Butler
Practical magic & the trained mind
The transmission
Walter Ernest Butler (1898–1978) was a British occultist, a former Liberal Catholic Church priest, and a key student of Dion Fortune within the Society of the Inner Light.
After leaving Fortune’s organization, he became a foundational teacher of the modern Western mystery tradition, co-founding the Servants of the Light school, which he later handed to his student Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki.
His clear, no-nonsense instructional books — Magic: Its Ritual, Power and Purpose, The Magician: His Training and Work, and How to Develop Clairvoyance — became standard introductions to disciplined occult practice.
Butler insisted that magic was a training of consciousness and will, demystifying it as a psychological-spiritual technology rather than superstition.
