Practical magic & the trained mind

Walter Ernest Butler (1898–1978) was a British occultist, a former Liberal Catholic Church priest, and a key student of Dion Fortune within the Society of the Inner Light.

After leaving Fortune’s organization, he became a foundational teacher of the modern Western mystery tradition, co-founding the Servants of the Light school, which he later handed to his student Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki.

His clear, no-nonsense instructional books — Magic: Its Ritual, Power and Purpose, The Magician: His Training and Work, and How to Develop Clairvoyance — became standard introductions to disciplined occult practice.

Butler insisted that magic was a training of consciousness and will, demystifying it as a psychological-spiritual technology rather than superstition.

Magic as mind-training: Framed ritual and magical work primarily as the systematic development and direction of trained attention and will.

  • The magician’s curriculum: The Magician: His Training and Work outlined a practical syllabus of inner development.
  • Demystification: Presented occult practice in lucid, rational terms accessible to the modern reader.
  • Lineage transmission: Co-founded the Servants of the Light, seeding a major teaching lineage of practical inner work.

Influenced by: Dion Fortune and the Society of the Inner Light; Theosophy; Hermetic Qabalah.

  • Influenced: Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki and the Servants of the Light; a broad current of accessible practical-magic authorship.
