Emotional integration through present-moment awareness
The transmission
Michael Brown (1962–2016) was a South African writer and teacher, formerly a music-industry journalist, who developed The Presence Process out of his own struggle with a chronic, acutely painful neurological condition (Horton’s syndrome / cluster headaches).
After years of conventional treatment failed, he undertook a long personal quest—studying breathwork, shamanic practice, and present-moment awareness—and found that repeatedly entering an “enlivened state of being” through ceremonial practice and conscious breathing reduced and eventually quieted his condition.
From the late 1990s he distilled this into a practical, self-administered procedure that “anyone, anywhere” could follow, published as The Presence Process: A Healing Journey into Present Moment Awareness (2005; revised 2010, Namaste Publishing).
He returned to South Africa in 2002 to share the work, and later wrote companion volumes (Alchemy of the Heart, The Presence Portal). Brown’s place in the Atlas is as a synthesizer who bridges two streams: present-moment awareness (the “Now” spirituality popularized by Eckhart Tolle—both published by Namaste) and breath-based emotional release (the connected-breathing lineage of Leonard Orr’s Rebirthing).
His distinctive contribution is packaging these into a disciplined 10-week curriculum centered on gentle, self-directed consciously connected breathing (about 15 minutes, twice daily) plus the skill of felt-perception—feeling emotion as bodily sensation rather than story.
He represents the gentle, low-claim, self-help pole of the breathwork-and-presence tradition: less intense than Orr’s facilitated Rebirthing or Grof’s Holotropic Breathwork, oriented toward integrating suppressed “emotional charge” so that one can respond rather than react.
What they gave
The Presence Process: A structured 10-week, self-facilitated journey for integrating suppressed emotion through present-moment awareness.
- Consciously connected breathing, gentled: Adapted connected breathing into a brief (≈15 min), gentle, self-directed daily practice—distinct from the long, facilitated, high-intensity Rebirthing/Holotropic sessions.
- Felt-perception: The core skill of feeling emotion as raw bodily sensation in the present, without the accompanying story, blame, or analysis.
- Response over reaction (“response-ability”): Reframing present upsets as old “emotional charge” resurfacing to be felt and integrated, rather than as something caused by the trigger—reclaiming the ability to respond consciously.
The line they stand in
Taught by / Influenced by: present-moment awareness teachings; his own healing from a chronic neurological condition; the connected-breathing and shamanic practices he studied during his recovery.
- Taught / Influenced: breath-based emotional-integration practice; the self-help / present-moment readership shared with Eckhart Tolle; later breathwork-for-emotional-healing currents.
