TRE — Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises; neurogenic tremors

David Berceli is an American therapist, trauma-intervention specialist, and certified bioenergetic therapist who created TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises).

His method grew out of years of fieldwork in conflict and disaster zones across the Middle East and Africa, where he noticed that the body’s spontaneous shaking and trembling under threat, ordinarily suppressed or judged as a loss of control, appeared to be a natural self-regulating response rather than a malfunction.

TRE is a simple sequence of exercises designed to fatigue and then gently activate this innate “neurogenic tremor” mechanism in a safe, controlled way, so that the nervous system can discharge deep tension and complete the stress response it had held unfinished.

He set out the approach in his book Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) and has taught the method internationally. Within the Atlas, Berceli belongs to the somatic-discharge lineage and sits in close conversation with Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing and the older Reichian body-therapy tradition: all three locate trauma in the body and treat healing as a physiological completion, the release of survival energy the body never got to finish, rather than an act of insight or positive thinking.

Berceli’s distinctive contribution is to make this discharge directly accessible through a repeatable set of physical exercises that a person can learn and practice without needing to narrate or relive the original event.

This reinforces the anti-bypass theme, that genuine change is bottom-up and embodied, and extends it toward a self-directed, scalable practice. As with much trauma-modality work, TRE is widely practiced and reported as helpful, while its controlled research base is still developing.

Created TRE: A standardized set of exercises that evokes therapeutic tremoring to release stored tension and stress.

  • Reframed shaking as healing: Recast the body’s involuntary “neurogenic tremor” as a natural self-regulating discharge rather than a symptom to suppress.
  • Field-tested, scalable method: Developed and refined the approach through trauma work in conflict and disaster settings, designed for self-practice.
  • Embodied, non-narrative release: Offers discharge of trauma through the body without requiring the person to retell or re-experience the event.

Influenced by: bioenergetic / Reichian body therapy; trauma and stress physiology; fieldwork in conflict and war zones; the autonomic nervous-system view of trauma.

  • Influenced: the somatic trauma-release field; body-based stress and self-regulation practices; trauma-informed humanitarian work; the wider somatic-discharge movement alongside Somatic Experiencing.
