The relaxation response
The transmission
Herbert Benson (1935–2022) was an American cardiologist and Harvard Medical School professor who founded what became the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
In the early 1970s he studied practitioners of Transcendental Meditation and documented a reproducible physiological state — reduced heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and metabolism — that he named the “relaxation response,” the body’s counterbalance to Walter Cannon’s “fight-or-flight.” Stripping the technique of religious content, he showed in his 1975 bestseller The Relaxation Response that simple practices (a repeated word or phrase plus a passive attitude) could elicit it, and went on to study its clinical benefits for hypertension, anxiety, chronic pain, and stress-related disorders.
Benson is a legitimate-science node and a cornerstone of mind-body medicine: he demonstrated, with mainstream physiological measurement, that mental practice produces real, measurable bodily change through the autonomic nervous system.
For the mind-power archive he is the rigorous reference point for “the mind affects the body” — a claim that is solidly established for stress physiology, in sharp contrast to the contested parapsychological “mind affects matter at a distance” claims.
The honest distinction: Benson’s relaxation response is well-evidenced psychophysiology working through known nervous-system pathways; it does not validate manifestation, distant intentionality, or “thinking away” serious organic disease. Tier: legitimate science.
What they gave
The relaxation response: A measurable, reproducible physiological state elicited by mental practice — the evidentiary anchor for “mind affects body.”
- Secularized technique: Showed the benefit does not depend on any belief system, making it clinically deployable.
- Clinical mind-body medicine: Helped found a credible medical field studying stress and mental practice.
- Honest boundary: Establishes mind-over-stress-physiology, not mind-over-matter or manifestation.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Transcendental Meditation (his original subjects); cardiology; Walter Cannon’s stress physiology.
- Influenced: Mind-body medicine; clinical meditation/relaxation programs; parallels Jon Kabat-Zinn’s MBSR.
