Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Richard Bandler (born 1950) is an American author who, as a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz in the early 1970s, partnered with linguistics professor John Grinder to analyze why certain therapists produced extraordinary results.

Working under the intellectual umbrella of Gregory Bateson, the pair studied the gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, the family therapist Virginia Satir, and the hypnotist Milton Erickson, attempting to extract the explicit verbal and behavioral patterns behind their seemingly intuitive genius.

The result, named Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), was published in The Structure of Magic (1975–76). Bandler’s contribution to the mind-power lineage was to recast transformation as information-processing and software-editing rather than spiritual realization.

In the NLP frame, a person does not contact a Universal Mind; they run an internal “world-model” built from language and sensory representations that systematically delete, distort, and generalize raw experience. Change therefore becomes a technical operation: locate the faulty verbal structure or sensory “submodality” and edit it.

This computational, almost engineering metaphor—mind as programmable system—stripped the remaining mysticism from suggestion and belief work, and (despite NLP’s contested scientific status) became enormously influential through the coaching and self-help industry.

Co-founding NLP: Establishes a model treating subjective experience as a structured, editable program of language and sensory representation.

  • The “map is not the territory” mechanics: Operationalizes Korzybski’s idea—belief change means revising the internal map (via deletions, distortions, generalizations), not the world.
  • Modeling: Introduces the explicit method of extracting and replicating the patterns of high performers, making “excellence” transferable.
  • Submodalities and anchoring: Develops concrete techniques for altering the sensory coding of memories and triggering desired states on cue.
My understanding is that language is the accumulated wisdom of a group of people. Out of a potentially infinite amount of sensory experience, language picks out those things which are repetitive in the experience of the people developing the language and that they have found useful to attend to in consciousness.
