Alice Bailey

1880-1949 Theosophy

Ascended masters, New Age precursor

Alice Bailey (1880–1949) was a British-American esotericist who began within the Adyar Theosophical Society and went on to become one of the most consequential bridges between classical Theosophy and the modern New Age.

From 1919 she claimed to receive telepathic dictation from a Tibetan master she called Djwhal Khul (“the Tibetan”), producing some two dozen volumes on cosmology, psychology, healing, and discipleship. With her husband Foster Bailey she founded the Lucis Trust and the Arcane School, an esoteric training organization that taught meditation, service, and conscious cooperation with the “Spiritual Hierarchy.” She popularized the phrase “New Age” and the idea of an imminent shift into the Age of Aquarius guided by ascended masters.

Bailey is arguably the single most important proximate precursor of the late-twentieth-century New Age, and her relevance to the mind-power lineage is direct and structural. She inherited the Theosophical Society lineage and its ascended-masters / spiritual-hierarchy concept from Blavatsky and reframed it as an actionable program: ordinary aspirants could, through meditation and disciplined thought, align themselves with the Hierarchy’s “Plan” and help “anchor” higher energies on Earth.

Her teachings supplied much of the working vocabulary of contemporary ascension spirituality—the Great Invocation, the externalization of the Hierarchy, the Christ/Maitreya return, the seven rays, and the disciple’s path of conscious evolution.

Through Benjamin Creme’s Share International, the Findhorn community, and countless channeling and “light-worker” currents, Bailey’s synthesis of Theosophical hierarchy with practical meditative technique became the operating system of New Age ascension culture.

Coining and propagating “New Age”: Gave the coming-age framework its name and its expectation of a guided collective spiritual transition.

  • The Spiritual Hierarchy made actionable: Converted the abstract ascended-masters concept into a practical discipleship program of meditation and “energy” work.
  • Channeled transmission as method: Modeled the now-ubiquitous practice of receiving teaching telepathically from a discarnate master, foundational to modern channeling.
  • The Great Invocation and group meditation: Introduced collective mental/meditative techniques aimed at influencing planetary consciousness.
There is no death. There is, as you know, entrance into fuller life. There is freedom from the handicaps of the fleshly vehicle.
A Treatise on White Magic (1934)
Each initiation marks the passing of the pupil in the Hall of Wisdom into a higher class, marks the clearer shining forth of the inner fire and the transition from one point of polarisation to another, entails the realisation of an increasing unity with all that lives and the essential oneness of the self with all selves.
