The transmission
Christopher Bache is an American philosopher of religion who spent two decades undertaking a disciplined series of high-dose LSD sessions, documented in Dark Night, Early Dawn (2000) and LSD and the Mind of the Universe (2019).
Working within Stanislav Grof’s framework, Bache treated his sessions as systematic exploration of deep transpersonal terrain, reporting encounters with what he described as collective human suffering, archetypal and “diamond” levels of mind, and an intelligent, learning universe.
He has held an academic post in religious studies, lending his accounts an unusually scholarly framing. Bache’s place in the mind-power lineage is as a contemporary systematizer of the deepest, most cosmological end of the psychedelic project.
He explicitly advances a consciousness-first metaphysics in which mind is the ground of a purposeful, evolving universe and individual exploration contributes to a collective field. These claims are first-person phenomenological reports interpreted through a metaphysical lens, not empirical findings, and Bache is candid that he is offering a worldview rather than proof.
His work strongly reinforces the New Age premise that consciousness is fundamental and that altered states reveal the universe to be mental in nature—an idea adjacent to reality-shifting and idealist spirituality.
What they gave
High-dose cartography: Systematically mapped the deepest reaches of psychedelic experience over decades.
- Collective-mind theory: Framed individual exploration as contributing to a shared field of consciousness.
- Consciousness-first cosmology: Articulated a worldview of mind as the ground of a purposeful universe.
- Scholarly framing: Gave deep-psychedelic mysticism academic articulation. (Note: claims are phenomenological/metaphysical, not empirical.)
