Richard Bach
Self-transcendence & reality as belief
The transmission
Richard Bach is an American writer, a former pilot, whose short allegorical novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull (1970) became a defining inspirational bestseller of its era—a fable about a seagull who refuses the limits of the flock and pursues the perfection of flight, becoming a parable of self-transcendence and the refusal of imposed limitation.
His later Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah (1977) made his metaphysics explicit, presenting teachings such as “argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they’re yours” and the idea that the apparent world is a malleable construct shaped by belief.
Bach’s place in the Atlas is as a popularizer of belief-shapes-reality and limitless-potential themes through accessible fiction. Illusions in particular reads as a New Thought primer in narrative form—its aphorisms about limitation being self-imposed and reality being belief-dependent restate core mind-power doctrine, and Jonathan Livingston Seagull‘s message of transcending the flock’s limits became a touchstone for human-potential optimism.
Alongside Coelho and Redfield, Bach exemplifies the memetic pattern of metaphysics-as-fiction: spreading the conviction that limits are illusions and belief is creative to a mass readership that might never read a New Thought treatise.
