A Teacher
John Assaraf
Reprogramming the subconscious brain for achievement
The transmission
John Assaraf was born on October 7, 1961, in Tel Aviv, Israel, and grew up in Montreal, Canada, after his family emigrated there. By his own account a troubled teenager, he was redirected by a mentor toward goal-setting and personal development, and went on to build a series of businesses, most prominently in real estate.
He reached a wide audience through his appearance as one of the teachers in the 2006 film and book The Secret, where his often-repeated vision-board story — finding, years after making it, that he had moved into a house he had pictured on a board — became one of the work’s signature anecdotes.
Following The Secret, Assaraf shifted his public framing away from the more mystical “law of attraction” language toward the vocabulary of neuroscience and behavior change, founding the company NeuroGym (formerly Praxis Now) to sell online programs and coaching aimed at “retraining” the brain for success.
His teaching blends conventional achievement methods — clear goals, repeated visualization, emotional rehearsal — with popular accounts of neuroplasticity, priming, and the subconscious. He is a representative figure of the contemporary, science-flavored wing of success literature.
(Calm caveat: as with much of the goal-achievement and seminar-and-coaching market, Assaraf’s programs sit within an industry built on premium courses and income-style promises; the practical core — goal clarity, visualization, repetition — is better evidenced than the stronger neuro-marketing claims, and the two are worth keeping apart.)
What they gave
Neuroscience reframing of manifestation: Repackages visualization and law-of-attraction-style practice in the language of neuroplasticity, priming, and subconscious “reprogramming,” updating the genre’s idiom for a science-minded audience.
- The vision board popularized: Through The Secret, helped make the vision board one of the most widely adopted visualization rituals in modern self-help.
- Subconscious installation through repetition: Emphasizes repeated, emotionally charged mental rehearsal as the mechanism by which goals are impressed below conscious awareness.
- Productizing mindset training: Builds the model of structured, subscription-style online “brain training” coaching that many later mindset entrepreneurs have followed.
In their words
Beliefs are not some special category of idea sitting at a higher station of truth than our ordinary, everyday mortal thoughts. Beliefs are not neccesarily “the truth” at all.
If your conscious brain is a lot more limited than you realized, your nonconscious brain is vastly more powerful than you have ever imagined.
Remember how often your conscious brain loses focus? Every six to ten seconds. Guess how often your nonconscious brain loses focus? Never. Not once. Not ever.
Your life is your creation, and the principal tool you have used to create it is your beliefs.
If you’re interested, you’ll do what’s convenient and what is easy.
I was told that if you work hard, bust your butt, go to school, and get great grades, you’d do well in life. That’s a bunch of crap.
