George Arundale

1878–1945 Theosophy

English educator who led the Society through a planned renewal.

George Sydney Arundale was an English-born Theosophist and educator, raised by his aunt Francesca Arundale, an early member who hosted Helena Blavatsky.

A Cambridge graduate, he taught at the Central Hindu College in Benares at Annie Besant’s invitation. He served as the third International President of the Theosophical Society from 1934 to 1945.

As president he launched a Seven Year Plan to develop the Adyar headquarters and strengthen the Society’s cohesion, and was a tireless lecturer and organizer.

A protege of Annie Besant within the Theosophical Society, he succeeded her as its third International President; he married the dancer Rukmini Devi Arundale.
