Parapsychology & Survival Research

Mind may exert or receive influence beyond the recognized senses (telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, psychokinesis) and may survive bodily death — claims to be settled by controlled investigation rather than faith.

Psychical research from 1882 (SPR); laboratory parapsychology from 1930 (Duke); continuing

Parapsychology is the attempt to study, by scientific method, the claims that Spiritualism made by faith: that mind can reach beyond the body (telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition — together “psi”), can affect matter at a distance (psychokinesis), and may survive death.

It is the discipline that took the séance into the laboratory. For the Atlas it is an instrument: not a belief system but the honest test bench where mind-power’s strongest empirical claims are pressed — and where they have, so far, failed to produce a repeatable demonstration.

It belongs to the skeptical literature precisely because it takes the claims seriously enough to test them.

Society for Psychical Research (1882). Founded in London (first president, the Cambridge philosopher Henry Sidgwick) to investigate mediumship, telepathy and apparitions rigorously. It both documented puzzling cases and exposed frauds.

  • F. W. H. Myers coined “telepathy” and built the “subliminal self” theory in Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death (1903).
  • Charles Richet — Nobel laureate physiologist — coined “ectoplasm” and “metapsychics,” lending scientific stature to the field.
  • J. B. Rhine (Duke, 1930) founded the Parapsychology Laboratory with William McDougall and, in Extra-Sensory Perception (1934), popularized the term ESP and the card-guessing (Zener) experimental paradigm — the birth of statistical, lab-based parapsychology.
  • Mid-late 20th c.: the ganzfeld telepathy experiments, the PEAR lab at Princeton (micro-psychokinesis), Ian Stevenson’s reincarnation case studies, and survival/NDE research (later, Pim van Lommel’s Lancet NDE study, 2001).
  • 2011: Daryl Bem’s “Feeling the Future” precognition paper in a top journal triggered large failed replications and helped catalyze psychology’s broader replication-crisis reforms.
A note on the evidence. After ~140 years, parapsychology has produced no effect that replicates reliably across independent, well-controlled labs. Its meta-analyses are genuinely contested (the ganzfeld debate between the Honorton and the Milton–Wiseman camps is the model case), and several signature results (Rhine’s early card work, PEAR’s micro-PK) did not survive scrutiny or independent replication. The field’s lasting contributions are arguably methodological — randomization, blinding, the exposure of fraud, and a front-row seat to how science adjudicates extraordinary claims. Standing: at its methodological best, in its conclusions.

Psi is testable. Telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition and psychokinesis are framed as empirical hypotheses, not articles of faith. (→ Life Is a Dream reality is participatory.)

  • Mind may not be confined to the brain. The survival hypothesis treats consciousness as potentially independent of the body. (→ Consciousness Is Fundamental; Nothing Ever Ends death is not the end.)
  • Evidence over authority. Claims must be shown under controlled conditions — the value the field shares with skepticism.
  • The observer matters. Psi research keeps company with quantum-measurement speculation about consciousness and reality (handled cautiously — see the skeptical literature).

J. B. Rhine — Extra-Sensory Perception (1934); founder of lab parapsychology.

Parapsychology is the empirical proving-ground for Consciousness Is Fundamental (is consciousness fundamental, or brain-bound?) and Nothing Ever Ends (does anything survive death?).

Its psi claims, if ever confirmed, would underwrite Life Is a Dream (a participatory reality) — which is exactly why the Atlas keeps the question open and honestly scored rather than answered by enthusiasm.

Grew from: Spiritualism (the claims) and Mesmerism (the trance phenomena) — psychical research was founded to test what the séance asserted. Runs alongside: scientific skepticism (its adversary-collaborator) and the quantum-consciousness speculation it is often entangled with.

Seeded: the credibility framing (for better and worse) that transpersonal psychology and modern consciousness studies inherited.
