The Traditions

Ancient roots

Nonduality (the Perennial Nondual Stream)

Subject and object, self and world, are not ultimately two; there is one seamless awareness, ever-present and already complete, and ‘you’ are not a separate thing inside it but that awareness itself — so realization is recognition, not attainment.

Spans all eras — from the Upanishads (c. 800 BCE) and Mahayana Buddhism (c. 1st–2nd c. CE) through Sufism, Christian mysticism, and Dzogchen, to the modern Western 'nondual' / satsang scene (20th–21st c.)

Nonduality — Sanskrit advaita, “not-two” — is not a religion or a single school but a recurring recognition that surfaces, independently, wherever a contemplative tradition follows attention all the way back to its source.

The insight is always the same in essence: the felt split between the experiencer and the experienced, the self “in here” and the world “out there,” is not the final fact. There is one undivided field of awareness, and what we call “I” is not a separate object inside that field but the very awareness in which everything appears.

The classic phrasing is “not one, not two”: not a blank monism that erases distinctions, but a recognition that distinctions are appearances within a seamless ground. For the mind-power lineage this is the deep floor under everything.

If self and world are not two, then the inner and the outer are not the strangers they seem; the witness behind the ego is the same reality the seeker has been chasing; and the “goal” of every practice turns out to be the ground one is already standing on.

Nonduality is where the lineage’s boldest claims — “consciousness is primary,” “you are already That” — come to rest.

Because it is a cross-tradition insight rather than one founder’s doctrine, nonduality has many independent emergences. Descriptions of nondual awareness are found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and the Christian and Neoplatonic West.

  • India — Advaita Vedanta. The Upanishadic Tat Tvam Asi (“That Thou Art”), systematized by Gaudapada and Shankara.
  • Mahayana & Zen Buddhism. Nagarjuna’s Madhyamaka collapses the duality of samsara and nirvana; Zen (“direct pointing to the mind”) and Huayan develop a rigorous nondualism. The Zen/Madhyamika/Dzogchen line is “nondualism proper” — distinct from mere monism.
  • Tibetan Dzogchen & Mahamudra. Pointing-out instructions to the ever-present nature of mind — vivid, spacious, nondual awareness.
  • Sufism — wahdat al-wujud. Ibn Arabi’s “Oneness of Being”: all phenomena are manifestations of a single Reality (al-Haqq, the Real).
  • Christian mystical union. Eckhart’s ground of the soul where God and self are not two; the apophatic via negativa of The Cloud of Unknowing.
  • The modern Western nondual / satsang scene (20th–21st c.). Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta seeded a lineage carried by Alan Watts (who popularized Zen and Vedanta for the West), Jiddu Krishnamurti, Eckhart Tolle, and the contemporary satsang teachers Mooji, Adyashanti, and Rupert Spira.
A note on the evidence (important) — the “neo-Advaita” / spiritual-bypassing critique. A large slice of the modern satsang scene teaches a stripped-down message: “there is no separate self, no one to become enlightened, nothing to do, nowhere to go — awakening is already the case.” As a pointer this is faithful to the tradition. But this neo-Advaita style is widely criticized — including by traditional Advaitins — for routinely omitting the preparation. Classical nonduality paired its absolute-level insight with rigorous discipline: ethical training, meditation, study, and the dissolving of deep habit-patterns (vasanas). Strip those away and the absolute-level talk becomes a tool for spiritual bypassing — using “there’s no one here and nothing to fix” to dodge psychological work, ethics, grief, and real practice. The critique is not that the insight is false; it is that recognition without integration is shallow and can be quietly used as an evasion. This Atlas honors the nondual recognition as real and keeps the honest caveat in view — the All Is One truth node carries the same warning.

Not-two. Subject and object, knower and known, self and world, are not ultimately separate; the division is a conceptual overlay on one seamless experience. (→ All Is One.)

  • Awareness as the ever-present ground. What you fundamentally are is the aware space in which all experience arises — never absent, never an object, the constant behind every changing state. (→ All Is One, Consciousness Is Fundamental.)
  • The illusoriness of the separate self. The “me” is a recurring thought-and-feeling pattern, not a solid entity; investigated closely, no separate self is found. (→ All Is One.)
  • Recognition, not attainment. Because awareness is already present, realization is a seeing through of the illusion, not the acquisition of a new state. “You are already That.” (→ All Is One.)
  • Direct pointing / self-enquiry. Practices that turn attention back on the one who is looking — Ramana’s “Who am I?”, Zen’s direct pointing, Dzogchen’s pointing-out — rather than building toward a far-off goal. (→ All Is One, All Is One.)

Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) — self-enquiry, “Who am I?”.

  • Alan Watts (1915–1973) — chief Western interpreter of Zen and Vedanta.
  • Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897–1981) — I Am That; abiding in the “I Am.”
  • Eckhart Tolle (b. 1948) — The Power of Now; present-moment nondual awareness.
  • Mooji (b. 1954) — satsang in the Ramana lineage.
  • Adyashanti (b. 1962) — Zen-informed contemporary nondual teacher.
  • Rupert Spira (b. 1960) — the “direct path,” awareness-based inquiry.
  • Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895–1986) — choiceless awareness; “the observer is the observed.”
  • Cross-tradition sources (in prose / sibling pages): Ibn Arabi (wahdat al-wujud), Meister Eckhart, Nagarjuna, the Dzogchen tantras.

Nonduality states the deepest truths most sharply. All Is One all is one — the single, undivided field. All Is One the deeper Self — awareness beneath the ego, the witness that is never an object.

All Is One the seeker is what they seek — its signature truth: the goal is the ground you already are, and the All Is One node also carries this stream’s honesty caveat about bypassing.

All Is One inner gnosis liberates — recognition, not belief or effort, is what frees. These are not several truths so much as one recognition seen from different sides.

Grew from / alongside: it has no single root because it is a convergent insight — but its clearest classical instances are Vedanta (Advaita), Buddhism (Madhyamaka, Zen, Dzogchen), Sufism (Ibn Arabi’s Oneness of Being), and Christian mysticism (Eckhart’s union)., Seeded: the modern Western “nondual” / satsang movement, the present-moment teachings of popular spirituality, and — through that channel — much of contemporary manifestation and consciousness culture, which borrows nonduality’s “you are already whole / already That” frame (sometimes faithfully, sometimes as the bypassing the note on the evidence flags).
