The Law of Assumption
You do not attract by wanting — you become by assuming. Occupy the feeling of the wish already fulfilled, persist in that state, and the outer world has no choice but to conform.
Neville Goddard's teaching (books + lectures, c. 1939–1972); massive online revival c. 2020s framing it as distinct from the Law of Attraction
What It Is
The Law of Assumption is the teaching of the mystic Neville Goddard (1905–1972): that imagination is the only creative power, and the way to change your life is not to attract a thing but to assume the feeling of the wish already fulfilled and persist in that state until it hardens into fact.
Its operative move is identity, not desire. You do not stand outside your good asking a universe to send it; you step into the end and live from it as already true. In the lineage this is the sharpest popular statement of one specific truth — The Inner Creates the Outer, identity precedes circumstance — and it matters today because a large online movement (c.
2020s) revived Neville’s work and deliberately positioned it as distinct from the Law of Attraction. Where LoA says “raise your vibration and attract a match,” the Law of Assumption says “there is no outside to attract from — consciousness is the sole cause, so be the state and reality must follow.”
Origins & History
Neville Goddard (c. 1939–1972). Born in Barbados in 1905, Neville settled in New York, left a dancing career around 1929, and was taught Kabbalah and esoteric Bible interpretation by a teacher he called Abdullah.
Over roughly three decades he wrote some fourteen books and gave several hundred lectures, including a mid-1950s television series. Core texts include Feeling Is the Secret (1944), The Power of Awareness (1952), and The Law and the Promise (1961). He died in 1972.
- The online revival (c. 2020s). Neville’s lectures (long in the public domain in spirit through free transcription sites) fueled a massive TikTok and YouTube manifestation wave. Creators rebranded the teaching as “the Law of Assumption,” explicitly contrasting it with the Law of Attraction, and elaborated their own methods — the “void state,” scripting, affirmations, and “lucky girl syndrome.” YouTube teachers such as Edward Art systematized Neville’s metaphysics for this audience.
A note on the evidence. Two things to keep straight. First, the LoA-vs-LoA distinction is real and is how the revival frames it, not a quirk of one creator: assumption is about being the state (occupying the end), not attracting an external object — Neville taught consciousness as the only reality, with no outside “universe” granting requests. Second, Neville’s signature claim, “everyone is you pushed out” (your entire world is a projection of your own consciousness), is a far stronger, solipsism-adjacent metaphysics than LoA’s. That same unfalsifiability drives the revival’s harshest edge — the “it always works, you just blocked it / you’re persisting in the old assumption” framing — which slides easily into self-blame. The Atlas answers this with its fault-vs-mechanism split (§5).
Core Teachings
Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. Don’t picture the goal at a distance; feel the inner reality of already having it. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer, The Inner Creates the Outer.)
- Imagination creates reality. “Imagining creates reality” — the imaginal act, vividly felt, is the cause; the outer event is the effect. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer.)
- SATS — the State Akin To Sleep. Enter the drowsy, half-asleep threshold and there impress a short, sensory scene that implies the wish is fulfilled — the moment the subconscious is most receptive. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer; technique.)
- Persistence in the assumption. “An assumption, though false, if persisted in, will harden into fact” — the state must be lived in, not visited once. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer, The Inner Creates the Outer.)
- “Everyone is you pushed out.” Every person and event in your world reflects your own state of consciousness; change yourself and they change. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer — stated by Neville at full, solipsism-adjacent strength.)
- Living in the end (the online methods). The revival’s “void state,” scripting, and robotic affirmations are all ways to get into the end and stay there. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer, All Is One.)
Key Figures & Texts
Neville Goddard — Feeling Is the Secret (1944), The Power of Awareness (1952), The Law and the Promise (1961) — the source teaching and its primary texts.
- The modern Law of Assumption movement — the c. 2020s online revival that named and reframed the teaching against LoA.
- Edward Art — YouTube teacher who systematized Neville’s metaphysics for the revival audience.
- Neville’s own teacher Abdullah (in prose; no node) — the esoteric-Bible / Kabbalah lineage behind the work.
The Perennial Truths It Carries
The Law of Assumption is the cleanest popular statement of The Inner Creates the Outer — identity precedes circumstance (“you get what you ARE, not what you want”).
It also carries The Inner Creates the Outer imagination as a creative faculty, The Inner Creates the Outer feeling as the operative force (the felt assumption, not the dry thought), The Inner Creates the Outer the re-impressing of the subconscious (SATS), The Inner Creates the Outer the outer mirroring the inner, and All Is One the seeker already being what they seek (you don’t travel to the state — you assume it now).
On the self-blame edge, the Atlas applies the split firmly: your assumed state may genuinely be shaping your results (mechanism — workable), but a result you don’t want is not your moral failure (fault — rejected). Assumptions are built unconsciously, by repetition and conditioning; you can change the mechanism without carrying any guilt for having authored it. Harsh about the mechanism, gentle about the person.
Lineage & Influence
Grew from: the New Thought stream and its mystical-Christian / Kabbalistic wing (via Abdullah), with imagination-as-cause running back through Blake and the Hermetic “all is Mind.”, Sits against / alongside: the Law of Attraction, which the revival treats as the externalizing rival to be corrected; and Reality Transurfing (Vadim Zeland), another identity-and-state model popular in the same online manifestation space.,
