Digital Physics & Simulation Theory
The universe is, at bottom, information being computed — and if reality is code, then mind, observation, and ‘reality-as-programmable’ acquire a new (often over-extended) significance.

What It Is
Digital physics is the serious scientific proposal that the universe is fundamentally informational or computational — that “stuff” reduces to bits and the cosmos is, in some sense, running a computation.
Simulation theory is its philosophical extension: that our reality may be a computed simulation. For the Atlas, this stream is the modern, scientific-sounding vessel into which the ancient “reality is mind/information” intuition has been poured. It is genuinely respectable at its core (Wheeler, Lloyd, Bostrom are not cranks) and genuinely abused at its edges (where “reality is code” becomes “therefore you can hack reality with intention”). Keeping that distinction crisp is the whole point of including it.
Origins & History
Konrad Zuse (1969) — Rechnender Raum (“Calculating Space”), the founding proposal that the universe is a deterministic computation (a cellular automaton). Zuse also built the first programmable computer.
- Edward Fredkin — developed “digital philosophy” / finite-nature: reality as a vast cellular automaton.
- John Archibald Wheeler — coined “ it from bit“ (1989/1990): every physical thing derives its existence from information-theoretic, observer-posed yes/no questions. A mainstream giant of physics.
- Seth Lloyd — Programming the Universe (2006): the cosmos as a quantum computer computing its own behavior (peer-reviewed quantum-information science).
- Stephen Wolfram — A New Kind of Science (2002) and the later Wolfram Physics Project: the universe from simple computational rules.
- Nick Bostrom (2003) — the simulation argument: a rigorous trilemma (not the claim “we are definitely simulated,” but that one of three propositions must hold). Serious analytic philosophy.
- Fringe edge (flagged, not endorsed): Burkhard Heim, Claude Swanson, and “free-energy”/scalar figures who borrow this vocabulary.
A note on the evidence. Keep four bands distinct (per the empirical-standing layer): (a) legitimate physics treating information as fundamental (Wheeler, Lloyd); (b) serious computational-universe research programs (Zuse, Fredkin, Wolfram) — minority but real; (c) rigorous philosophy (Bostrom’s trilemma); (d) spiritual over-extension — “the universe is a simulation, so reality is hackable by intention/reality-shifting.” Band (d) does not follow from (a)–(c): nothing in digital physics says a participant can edit the computation by belief. The simulation argument, popularized, becomes “simulation-spirituality” — a powerful meme, not a result.
Core Teachings
Information is fundamental. Bits, not atoms, may be the bottom layer of reality. (→ Consciousness Is Fundamental, recast: the ground is information/mind-like rather than dead matter.)
- The observer participates. Wheeler’s “participatory universe” — observation helps bring the observed into definiteness. (→ Life Is a Dream reality is participatory.)
- As code below, so world above. The same computational pattern generates structure at every scale. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer as above, so below — the Hermetic intuition in informational dress.)
- Reality may be rendered, not given (simulation argument). (→ Only Love Is Real — the “given” world as a constructed display.)

The Perennial Truths It Carries
Digital physics is the 21st-century scientific restatement of Consciousness Is Fundamental (the ground of reality is information/mind-like, not dead matter) and of Life Is a Dream (Wheeler’s participatory universe).
Its “as code, so cosmos” echoes The Inner Creates the Outer (as above, so below) in computational language. The Atlas uses it as evidence of how durable the consciousness/information-first intuition is — while flagging the leap from “informational reality” to “hackable reality.”
Lineage & Influence
Grew from: cybernetics and information theory (Wiener, Shannon); resonates with idealism (information as mind-like ground) → and Hermeticism (mentalism, correspondence).
Runs alongside / feeds: quantum-consciousness speculation (the observer, the measurement problem); and, popularized, the reality-transurfing/reality-shifting and simulation-spirituality currents that treat the “code” as editable.
