Channeling
A human ‘channel’ delivers a body of teaching attributed to a non-physical entity or higher source; across independent channels the message converges — consciousness creates reality, you are a fragment of one Whole, free will is sovereign, and the soul grows across many lives.
Roots in 19th-c. Spiritualism/mediumship; the modern channeling wave c. 1963–present (Seth 1963–1984; A Course in Miracles scribed 1965–1972; Ra/Law of One 1981–1984; Bashar 1983–present; Abraham-Hicks 1985–present)
What It Is
Channeling is the practice in which a human being — the channel or medium — enters an altered or receptive state and delivers a body of teaching attributed not to themselves but to a non-physical entity or higher source: a discarnate person, a “social memory complex,” an extraterrestrial intelligence, a collective, or a fragment of one’s own higher self.
It is the postwar New Age’s reframing of 19th-century Spiritualist mediumship: where Victorian séances sought contact with the dead, modern channeling seeks teaching — coherent philosophy, cosmology, and practical instruction delivered over years of sessions and published as books.
Channeling matters to the mind-power lineage because so much of its modern doctrine arrived through it. A striking feature is convergence: independent channels working in different decades, countries, and idioms — Seth, the Ra material, Abraham, Bashar — report a remarkably similar core.
Consciousness is primary and creates experience; separation is partial illusion and all is finally one; free will is inviolable; and the point of incarnate life is experience and growth across many lives. That a handful of unconnected sources land on nearly the same metaphysics is itself interesting, whatever one concludes about where the material comes from.
Origins & History
19th-century roots. Modern channeling descends from Spiritualism and mediumship, which spread from the late 1840s onward and established the basic format of a sensitive relaying messages from beyond.
- Seth — Jane Roberts (1963–1984). Jane Roberts began receiving an entity calling itself Seth on 2 December 1963; her husband Robert Butts transcribed the sessions, which continued (with a late hiatus for her final illness) until her death in 1984. Seth Speaks (1972) and The Nature of Personal Reality (1974) made “you create your own reality” a New Age watchword. → seth.
- A Course in Miracles — Helen Schucman (scribed 1965–1972). A Columbia University psychologist, Schucman reported an “inner voice” she identified with Jesus dictating a text; from 21 October 1965 she took it down in shorthand and read it daily to her colleague William Thetford, who typed it. The three main sections were complete by 1972; first published 1976.
- The Law of One / Ra — L/L Research (1981–1984). Carla Rueckert served as the instrument through whom an entity calling itself Ra spoke, Don Elkins asked the questions, and Jim McCarty scribed — 106 sessions across 1981–1984 (Elkins died in 1984; Rueckert in 2015). Published as The Ra Material / The Law of One.
- Bashar — Darryl Anka (1983–present). A former visual-effects artist, Anka has channeled Bashar since 1983 (first public session 1984), an entity described as a future-incarnation self from the planet Essassani.
- Abraham — Esther Hicks (1985–present). After she and her husband Jerry Hicks read the Seth material, Esther Hicks began (late 1985) to deliver the teachings of a non-physical collective she calls Abraham, which became a primary engine of the modern Law of Attraction.
A note on the evidence — the source is genuinely unverifiable, and that is the point. Whether channeled material originates from a discarnate being, an extraterrestrial intelligence, the channel’s own unconscious, a creative-dissociative process, or something else entirely is an open question that no one can settle from the outside — the claim about the source is, by its nature, not provable or disprovable. A teaching that is internally consistent, ethically serious, and practically fruitful is worth engaging with whether “Seth” is a personality, a part of Jane Roberts, or a name for something we have no vocabulary for. The cross-convergence of independent channels is striking on any reading — and it does not, by itself, prove the entities are real (shared cultural sources and a common human psychology could also explain it). We hold both: the convergence is genuinely interesting, and the source stays honestly undetermined.
Core Teachings
The recurring channeled cosmology, stated across sources:
- Consciousness creates reality. Mind/awareness is primary; experience is shaped from the inside out — the Seth formula “you create your own reality” is the banner. (→ Life Is a Dream reality is participatory; Creation Is Finished — you tune to / select your experience.)
- You are a fragment of the One. Individual selves are localizations of a single consciousness; separation is partial and ultimately illusory (“all is one”). (→ All Is One all is one.)
- Free will is sovereign. The channels (the Law of One especially) make non-interference and free choice a near-absolute law; nothing is imposed on a soul against its will. (→ Creation Is Finished free will / soul choice.)
- Reincarnation and soul growth. Many lives serve the education of the soul; difficulty is curriculum, not punishment. (→ It's All Play purpose is experience and growth.)
- Alignment / vibration. Especially in Abraham’s teaching, you match your experience by your felt state (“the better you feel, the better it gets”), linking channeling directly to the Law of Attraction. (→ The Inner Creates the Outer vibration.)

The Perennial Truths It Carries
Channeling is the modern delivery vehicle for several Atlas bedrock truths at once. It states All Is One — all is one consciousness (you are a fragment of the Whole), Creation Is Finished — free will / soul choice (the Law of One’s near-absolute non-interference), It's All Play — purpose is experience and growth (reincarnation as the soul’s curriculum), Life Is a Dream — reality is participatory and Creation Is Finished — selection (consciousness shapes/tunes the experience it meets).
Because these arrive together and convergently across independent channels, channeling functions in the Atlas as a kind of compressed restatement of the whole worldview — which is exactly why so many later teachers cite it.
Lineage & Influence
Grew from / alongside: 19th-century Spiritualism and mediumship gave it the form; the postwar New Age gave it the teaching-focused content; it overlaps heavily with the extradimensional / contactee current (Bashar, the Ra material)., Seeded: Channeling fed straight into modern manifestation culture.
The Law of Attraction as popularized owes much to Abraham-Hicks; A Course in Miracles shaped a generation of spiritual teachers (Marianne Williamson, Gary Renard, Wayne Dyer); Seth’s “you create your own reality” became the slogan under which much of the field now operates.,
