Emotional Awareness

To locate fear, anger or anxiety as concrete physical sensations in the body’s energy-processing centers, and feel them fully instead of acting them out, so they lose their power to drive behavior.

Beginner 1–10 min in the moment; ongoing as a way of noticing Contemporary Spirituality (Authentic Power)
Emotional awareness: When upset, drop the story and scan the body — chest, throat, solar plexus. Find the sensation (tight, churning, hot, contracted). Name it; notice constricted (fear) vs open (love). Feel the painful one fully without acting it out. This is a frightened part, not all of me. Let it move; anchor in the breath if it’s too much.

This is the body-based core of Gary Zukav and Linda Francis’s The Heart of the Soul: instead of analyzing an emotion or acting it out, you find where it lives in the body as physical sensation and feel it fully. Zukav teaches that emotions register in the body’s energy-processing centers (a map that resembles the seven chakras) as pressure, aching, churning, contraction, heat, or tightness — typically around the chest, throat, and solar plexus.

A constricted, hot, or aching center signals a frightened part of the personality processing energy in fear and doubt; an open, warm center signals a loving part processing in love and trust. The practice is to observe your energy system moment by moment, read these sensations as information, and stay with the painful one rather than discharging it through reaction.

Doing so is what lets you move beyond the control of painful emotions. It works the felt charge directly (The Inner Creates the Outer), treats inner state as the operative variable (Life Is a Dream), and rests on the awareness that can observe the personality (All Is One).

From The Heart of the Soul and the Seat of the Soul Institute’s emotional-awareness course:

  1. Turn attention inward to the body, not the story. When something disturbs you, drop out of the narrative (“he shouldn’t have…”) and into the body. The story is the frightened part talking; the sensation is the data.
  2. Scan the energy-processing centers. Sweep attention through the body, especially chest, throat, and solar-plexus/abdomen. Notice any pressure, aching, churning, contraction, heat, or tightness — and equally, any openness and warmth.
  3. Name what you find, plainly. “Tightness in the chest.” “Churning in the gut.” Identify whether the center feels constricted (fear/doubt) or open (love/trust). This is reading your energy system as it processes in the moment.
  4. Feel the painful sensation fully, without acting on it. Stay with the contraction or churn. Don’t suppress it and don’t act it out (the outburst, the withdrawal, the compulsion). Zukav’s claim: the sensation is energy being released; meeting it consciously is how you stop being run by it.
  5. Distinguish the part from yourself. This sensation belongs to a frightened part of my personality. You are the one aware of it. That gap is where choice becomes possible.
  6. Let it move; return as needed. Held in awareness, the charge tends to soften. If it’s too much, anchor in the breath or the feet and approach again in smaller doses. (Sourcing note: “energy-processing centers,” reading sensations as fear-and-doubt vs love-and-trust, and “observe your energy system moment by moment” are Zukav / Francis framings, faithfully paraphrased.)

Developed by Gary Zukav with Linda Francis in _The Heart of the Soul: Emotional Awareness_ (2001), the practical sequel to The Seat of the Soul (1989) that turns the “authentic power” idea into a daily emotional-awareness discipline.

The energy-system diagram echoes Eastern chakra maps; the method itself is Zukav and Francis’s.

Staying in the head. Analyzing why you’re upset is not the practice; finding where it sits in the body is.

  • Covert suppression. “Feeling it” can secretly mean “enduring it until it goes.” Genuinely allow it, without an agenda to be rid of it.
  • Flooding. With strong emotion, touch the sensation briefly, return to an anchor, repeat. Don’t force a marathon.
  • Skipping the choice. Awareness of the sensation is step one; The Heart of the Soul pairs it with then choosing a loving response (see the choosing-love technique).
  • Refinement: track the same center over a week — you’ll learn your personal fear signature (e.g., solar-plexus churn before people-pleasing).
