Creating Authentic Power

To build ‘authentic power’ by catching the moment a frightened part of the personality activates, choosing not to be run by it, and acting instead from a loving part — aligning the personality with the soul.

Choose love over fear: Notice when a frightened part fires (anger, judgment, control, the urge to please) — feel it in the body. Recognize this is a frightened part, not all of me. Feel it fully without acting it out. Then, with the fear still present, respond from a loving part — patient, honest, caring. That choice, repeated, is authentic power.

This is Gary Zukav’s central practice from The Seat of the Soul: the moment-to-moment work of creating authentic power by distinguishing the frightened parts of your personality from the loving parts, and consciously choosing to act from love rather than fear. Zukav defines authentic power as “aligning your personality with your soul” and consistently choosing love over fear.

The frightened parts show up as anger, judgment, resentment, righteousness, jealousy, the need to please or control; the loving parts are patient, caring, considerate, grateful, content. The practice is not to defeat or banish fear but to see that you are not your frightened parts — you can observe one as it activates, decline to be controlled by it, and respond from a loving part while the fear is still present. Zukav frames that exact moment — fear active, love chosen anyway — as the instant authentic power is created.

It operationalizes free will / soul-choice (Creation Is Finished), the felt emotional charge as the thing being worked (The Inner Creates the Outer), and the deeper Self that can witness the personality (All Is One).

Zukav and the Seat of the Soul Institute teach this as a gradual, repeatable cycle:

  1. Make this your priority. Treat creating authentic power — choosing love over fear — as the central project, not a side hobby. The work is done in ordinary life, in real reactions.
  2. Notice when a frightened part activates. A frightened part is online whenever you feel the pull to attack, defend, judge, control, please, withdraw, or be “right.” Zukav’s marker is physical sensation in your energy-processing centers (a clenched chest, churning gut, heat in the face) plus the impulse to react.
  3. Step back and dis-identify. Recognize: this is a frightened part of my personality — it is not the whole of me. You are the awareness that can see it. This breaks the automatic identification that lets the part act through you.
  4. Feel it fully without acting it out. Stay with the sensation rather than discharging it (the email, the cutting remark, the cold shoulder). Feeling it — instead of acting it — is what loosens its grip.
  5. Choose to act from a loving part. With the fear still present, deliberately respond from patience, care, or honesty. Zukav’s point is that authentic power is created precisely while fear is active and you choose love anyway — not after the fear is gone.
  6. Repeat; expect it to be gradual. Each choice weakens the frightened part’s control and strengthens the loving part. Over time the personality comes into alignment with the soul. (Sourcing note: “aligning your personality with your soul,” the frightened-vs-loving-parts vocabulary, and the energy-center sensations are Zukav / Seat of the Soul Institute phrasing, faithfully paraphrased; only short marker phrases are quoted.)

The framework is from Gary Zukav, The Seat of the Soul (1989), the book that introduced “authentic power,” the “multisensory human,” and the soul’s evolution, and which was repeatedly championed by Oprah Winfrey.

Zukav later developed the parts-and-emotional-awareness practice in depth with Linda Francis in The Heart of the Soul (2001) and through the Seat of the Soul Institute. It draws on perennial spirituality and the witness traditions while wrapping them in a soul-evolution and karma cosmology.

Treating fear as the enemy. The instruction is to feel the frightened part with awareness, not to crush or shame it. Suppression rebuilds the charge.

  • Waiting for the fear to vanish first. Authentic power is created with fear present. Don’t postpone the loving choice until you feel calm.
  • Spiritual bypass. “Choosing love” can become a mask for avoiding a real boundary. A loving part can say no firmly; love is not appeasement.
  • All insight, no choice. Naming the part without acting differently changes nothing. The choice in step 5 is the practice.
  • Refinement: pair with a short evening review — where did a frightened part run me today, and where did I choose love?
