Natural Magic
Concentrate a single clear intention by focusing it through a simple natural object or correspondence — a candle, herb, stone, or colour — chosen for its symbolic fit.
Natural magic focus: Name one clear intention. Choose a simple natural symbol that fits it — a candle colour, a herb, a stone. Settle, then concentrate the aim through the object: picture the outcome vividly and feel it as real, letting the symbol carry the focus. Voice it plainly if you like, then close and let go, and take practical steps. Read honestly, a clear-intent, symbolic-focus commitment ritual.
What it is
In Natural Magic and Witchcraft for Tomorrow, Doreen Valiente presents an accessible, self-directed approach in which the practitioner works not with elaborate apparatus but with clear intention focused through simple natural things — a candle of a fitting colour, a herb, a stone, a symbol drawn from traditional correspondences.
The natural object is a focus for the mind: a concrete anchor that gathers attention and feeling onto one definite aim. Whether one reads the result as occult causation or as disciplined intention-setting, the working core is the same — name one clear goal, attach it to a vivid symbol, and concentrate on it with feeling.
The Method
A faithful Valiente-style natural working:
- Decide one clear, specific intention. A single definite aim, not a vague wish or a tangle of several. Clarity is the precondition.
- Choose a simple natural focus. Pick an object whose traditional association fits the aim — a candle colour, a herb, a stone — drawn from natural correspondences. The point is symbolic fit, not expense or complexity.
- Set a quiet, attentive frame. A short pause, slow breathing, and undivided attention; many practitioners light the candle as the act of beginning.
- Concentrate the intention through the symbol. Hold the object (or gaze at the candle flame) and pour the aim into it — picturing the desired outcome clearly and feeling it as if real, letting the symbol carry and concentrate the focus.
- Voice it simply, if desired. A plain, sincere statement of the intention can give the focus words; ornate formulae are not required.
- Release and let it rest. Close the working, set the object aside (or let the candle burn safely down), stop fretting over the outcome, and take practical steps toward the aim. Source & Lineage
Doreen Valiente (1922–1999) did more than any other figure to make the Craft workable outside established covens. Natural Magic (1975) drew folk magic, herb- and stone-lore, and natural correspondences into a clear practitioner’s guide, and Witchcraft for Tomorrow (1978) provided a simplified Book of Shadows (Liber Umbrarum) for self-initiated and solitary workers.
Her emphasis throughout is on dedication and clear intent over apparatus. → originator node.
Common refinements
Vague or multiple aims. One clear intention per working; muddled intent muddles the focus.
- Collecting props instead of concentrating. The object is an aid to attention, not the cause — gathering ingredients while skipping the focused, felt concentration misses the point.
- Flat, feelingless focus. A distracted run-through does little; the vivid picture and genuine feeling are the engine.
- Clinging to the result. Re-checking and dwelling reintroduce anxious striving; concentrate, release, and move on.
- Substituting it for action. A working sets direction; it does not replace the practical steps toward the aim.
