Reiki Self-Treatment
Move through a fixed sequence of self-applied hand positions, resting the hands on the body and the attention on calm breathing — used as a structured relaxation and self-soothing practice.
In 5 lines: Lie or sit comfortably and breathe slowly. Rest your hands lightly through a sequence — eyes, head, throat, chest, belly — holding each a few minutes. Keep the touch light, the breath easy, attention resting under your hands. Treat it as deliberate rest and self-soothing, not as medical treatment. Close with a moment of stillness.
What it is
Reiki self-treatment is the self-applied form of Mikao Usui’s hands-on practice: you rest your own hands, in a set sequence of positions on your head and torso, holding each for a couple of minutes while breathing calmly.
In Reiki’s own terms, the practitioner is “channelling universal life energy” into the body. That claim is not supported by evidence (see §4). Described honestly, what you are actually doing is a structured ritual of resting touch, slow breathing, sustained attention, and quiet rest — a guided self-soothing routine.
This entry keeps that honest frame: the form is Usui’s; the mechanism is relaxation, not energy transfer.
The Method
A common self-treatment sequence (positions vary slightly by lineage):
- Settle and centre. Sit or lie down comfortably. Take a few slow breaths and let the body relax. (Many practitioners begin with a moment of gassho — palms together at the heart.)
- Hands to the face/eyes. Rest both palms lightly over the eyes and forehead. Hold ~2–5 minutes, breathing slowly, attention resting under your hands.
- Sides/back of the head. Move the hands to the temples, then cradle the back of the head.
- Throat / upper chest. Rest the hands lightly at the base of the throat or upper chest (resting near, not pressing, the throat).
- Heart / centre chest. Both hands over the centre of the chest.
- Upper and lower abdomen. Move the hands down to the solar plexus, then the lower belly.
- Move at your own pace. Hold each position roughly 2–5 minutes — longer where it feels calming. Keep the touch light and the breath slow and easy throughout.
- Close with a moment of stillness. Lower the hands, rest, and notice how the body feels before getting up. (Sourcing note: the hand-position self-treatment is attributed to Usui’s Reiki Ryoho and transmitted through its lineages; exact positions and order vary. The protocol above is a faithful description of a standard taught sequence, not a reproduction of any one manual. No Reiki attunement is needed to use it purely as the relaxation routine described here.)
Source & Lineage
Mikao Usui (1865–1926) developed hands-on Reiki within Usui Reiki Ryoho; his student Chujiro Hayashi systematised the clinical hand positions, and Hawayo Takata carried the practice west, from where the standardized self-treatment sequences spread.
Common refinements
Believing it treats illness. It does not. Use it for relaxation only, alongside (never instead of) proper care.
- Pressing or massaging. The touch is light and still; this is rest, not manipulation.
- Rushing the positions. The calming effect builds with a few unhurried minutes per position.
- Tense, forced breathing. Let the breath be slow and natural — that, plus rest, is doing the work.
- Chasing sensations. Warmth or tingling under the hands is explained by attention, warmth of contact, and circulation — not proof of energy. Don’t make it the goal.
- Skipping the closing stillness. A minute of rest at the end consolidates the calm.
