Affirmation · “The Subconscious Says Yes”
Holding the Thought of Perfect Health
To hold — and feel real — the thought of perfect health as oneness with the Infinite Life of which no disease can be predicated, opening the body to its felt ‘inflow.’
Go into the quiet with a peaceful, loving mind. Hold and feel: “I am one with the Infinite Life, which admits of no disease; I open my body to its inflow, and it is pouring through me now.” Stay calm and expectant until a warm quiet is felt; believe it is working; return to it often. Adjunct only — keep your medical care.
What it is
Trine’s health practice is not crude “say you’re well.” It is to hold, and make real, the thought of perfect health as a corollary of oneness: since the Infinite Life “can from its very nature admit of no disease,” and since that Life is your life, you realize wholeness as already your true nature and open the body to it.
He states the seed mechanism plainly: “the very fact of one’s holding the thought of perfect health sets into operation vital forces which will in time be more or less productive of the effect,—perfect health.” And, as everywhere in Trine, realization outranks rote affirmation: “more can be accomplished through the process of realization than through the process of affirmation, though for some affirmation may be a help, an aid to realization.”
The Method
Faithful to Trine (In Tune with the Infinite, ch. IV):
- Settle into the receptive silence. “With a mind at peace, and with a heart going out in love to all, go into the quiet of your own interior self.”.)
- Hold the realizing statement. Take up Trine’s own words and feel them true: “I am one with the Infinite Spirit of Life, the life of my life. I then as spirit. can in my own real nature admit of no disease.”
- Open the body to the inflow. “I now open my body. fully to the inflowing tide of this Infinite Life, and it now, even now, is pouring in and coursing through my body, and the healing process is going on.”
- Realize it bodily and expectantly. “Realize this so fully that you begin to feel a quickening and a warming glow imparted by the life forces to the body.” Keep the calm, expectant attitude — not “fearing, disturbed, and non-expectant.”
- Believe and continue. “Believe the healing process is going on. Believe it, and hold continually to it.” Repeat “at stated times, as often as he may choose,” then “continually hold himself in the same attitude of mind.”
- (Optional) localize. For a “local difficulty,” Trine adds: “hold this particular portion in thought,” directing the felt inflow to the affected part, in addition to the whole body. Affirmation, for Trine, is the training wheel for realization — if a spoken line (“I am whole; the Life of the Infinite is my life”) helps you feel the wholeness, use it; the felt realization is the goal.
Source & Lineage
The mental treatment of disease runs Quimby → Eddy → Evans → Hopkins → Fillmore; Trine popularizes a gentle, non-sectarian form. Contrast (don’t duplicate):
- Coué’s autosuggestion drills a formula (“Day by day.”) by mechanical repetition; Trine downgrades formula in favour of felt realization.
- Cady / Hopkins / Eddy treatments use structured denials + affirmations / argument; Trine uses no denial step — he affirms wholeness directly as oneness, warmly, without arguing error out of existence.
- Wattles / Collier “perfect health” images build a visual image; Trine works by realized identity with the Infinite Life, not picture-holding.
Common refinements
Treating it as a cure / delaying care. The single most dangerous error. It is an adjunct. Keep your treatment.
- Forcing or fearing. Trine bars the “fearing, disturbed” intensity; anxious effort is self-defeating. Calm expectancy is the operative state.
- Reciting without realizing. Rote affirmation Trine himself rates as weaker. Slow down until the wholeness is felt.
- Reading a good mood as a medical verdict. A warming, peaceful feeling is a state, not proof the body has healed.
