Entering the Alpha Level
Reach a relaxed, inwardly focused ‘alpha level’ using Stone’s compact countdown, as the working state for all the self-healing exercises in You the Healer.
Stone’s alpha entry in 5 lines: Eyes closed, gaze slightly up, relax head-to-toe. While learning, count down 10→1 (“a deeper, healthier level of mind”). Once conditioned, enter instantly with 3-to-1: breath out on “3, 3, 3,” then “2, 2, 2,” then “1, 1, 1.” Do your chosen healing exercise here. Count up 1→5 to return, awake and well.
What it is
The gateway exercise of Robert B. Stone’s You the Healer: a short, eyes-closed relaxation followed by a descending count that brings the practitioner to what the Silva tradition calls the alpha level — relaxed, inward, calm, but fully awake and self-directed.
Every other exercise in the book (the Mental Screen, programmed healing imagery) is performed from this state, so Stone teaches it first. It is, plainly, a self-administered relaxation / light-self-hypnosis induction.
This is Stone’s compact restatement of the Silva induction, not a separate invention. Where José Silva’s own course teaches a long 100→1 descent that shortens over a 40-day schedule, Stone foregrounds the two short forms most associated with the method in practice: a 10-to-1 deepening count and, once conditioned, an instant 3-to-1 entry.
The distinctive feature here is the brevity and the breath-paired number repetition, packaged for a self-healing reader.
The Method
Stone has the reader practise once or twice daily, building the habit over the book’s six-week course. The 10-to-1 method (the daily deepening count, used while learning).
- Sit or lie comfortably, eyes closed. Turn the closed eyes slightly upward (about 20°).
- Take a slow breath; on the out-breath, relax the body progressively — head, face, neck, shoulders, arms, torso, legs, feet — releasing each area.
- Count slowly down from 10 to 1, feeling yourself “go deeper” with each number. Stone pairs the descent with the standard affirmation that you are entering “a deeper, healthier level of mind.”
- Rest at “your level” and do the chosen exercise. The 3-to-1 method (the short entry, used once conditioned). After the longer count has been practised enough that the state arrives on cue:
- Eyes closed, gaze slightly up. Take a deep breath; on the exhale, mentally see and repeat the number “3” (three times).
- Breath in again; on the exhale, see and repeat “2” (three times).
- Breath in; on the exhale, see and repeat “1” (three times). You are now at level. Coming out. Count up 1→5, affirming that you are wide awake, feeling fine, in perfect health — better than before. (The 10-to-1 deepening, the 3-to-1 breath-paired entry, the upward eye angle, the “deeper, healthier level of mind” affirmation, and the count-up exit are the Silva-method forms Stone teaches in You the Healer. The schedule and number-repetition emphasis are his packaging.)
Source & Lineage
Robert B. Stone (1916–1999), an MIT graduate and prolific self-help author, was a Silva Method lecturer and Ambassador-at-Large for some two decades and co-wrote several titles directly with José Silva.
You the Healer (1994) presents the Silva self-healing course in book form as a 40-day, do-it-yourself program. The induction itself originates with José Silva (the alpha level, the countdown structure, the affirmations); Stone is the popularizing teacher, not the inventor.
Common refinements
Jumping to 3-to-1 too soon. The short entry only works after the longer 10-to-1 count has conditioned the state; rushing it yields shallow results.
- Chasing a literal brain state. You don’t need to verify “real alpha.” Relaxed, eyes-closed, inwardly focused and calm is the whole target.
- Falling asleep. Practising lying down can tip into sleep; sit up slightly if you keep dozing.
- Tension left in the body. If the count isn’t deepening you, return to the head-to-toe relaxation first.
